Spock's World

I just finished this book this evening. It is a book I have been trying to track down for the last seven years after I had a conversation with a fellow Trekkie in a bookstore in Dublin. It was an enjoyable read, though I must confess I preferred the parts that dealt with the 'present'. Diane Duane has really captured the voices of the characters.

On a side note, I like reading these books from an historical viewpoint, comparing them to what came later. Details such as the Federation being around for 180 years and how well Sarek was accepted on Earth bring a smile to my face. I also enjoyed the bit at the beginning featuring Ireland! All in all, a good book.

I know what you mean by a historical perspective. Last year, I tracked down "Final Frontier" (which came out right around the same time TNG started) and a big source of enjoyment from the novel was how it completely goes in the face of stuff that on-screen Trek later established. I get a kick out of those older titles.

Spock's World is one of my favorites. You should also try Diane Duane's Rihannsu books. The second Rihannsu book is The Romulan Way, which follows S'task and his people on then exodus to Romulus.

Although the Romulan history has in places been contradicted is places by later episodes, for the most part it still works pretty well. Well enough in fact, that the more recent Vulcan's Soul trilogy still used Duane's Romulan history as a framework for the "new" history.

I actually read the Rihannsu books earlier this year - I got the combined book that had the first four stories and really enjoyed The Romulan Way probably my favourite of the series.
