I know can't be the only fan of Spock who is absolutely THRILLED we're getting a movie with Nimoy reprising the role. I'm also a huge fan of Zachary Quinto from Heroes, so I don't think I could possibly be more excited about this movie. I really enjoy this forum and the discussions for the most part, but after seeing the umpteenth thread whining about not Shatner being in the movie, I thought I'd be fun and a nice change of pace to try and create a thread for us Spock Fans that are really looking forward to this movie. I wouldn't have minded seeing Nimoy and Shatner together again, but honestly I've never been a huge fan of Shatner, so I don't at all miss him either.
So what are you looking forward to the most about seeing Nimoy reprise the role?
There had been some speculation about Nimoy having a final death scene for the character, but I'm hoping we don't get that. We don't need to see him actually die to know that he doesn't have many years left in him. Spock's death scene in TWoK was so well done, I don't want to see them try and surpass it. I don't see a need for us to actually witness him take his last breaths. I also think it would cast a suppressive melancholic aura onto the film. Since this movie is supposed to showcase a new young crew, and the rebirth of a franchise, having a death scene like that in the movie, would seem to contradict that purpose.
Since Romulans are the rumored bad guys (something else I'm thrilled about. I love Romulans and boy did they get robbed out of their movie in Nemesis), I think some mention of the Unification movement where we last saw Spock would be a nice tie-in to the 24th century Treks. Nimoy also revealed in an interview that we'll be seeing three Spocks in this movie, so I suspect we'll get a glimpse of his childhood as well. I recently got a chance to see that excellent TAS episode where Spock goes back into time to save his younger self. I thought the design of the Vulcan city was really well done, and it would be interesting to see if Abrams decides to incorporate any of those elements.
Time travel is rumored to bring Nimoy and Quinto together. I am hoping this is true, because I think the two of them, having developed a friendship off-screen will be to give us a particularly good performance together. I know some are tired of the time travel plots in Star Trek, and I'm not exactly thrilled either if it turns out the Romulans are going back to kill Kirk. However, if the time travel plot manages to stay coherent and provide us with some wonderful scenes, I think it'll be more than worth it.
What do you hope we'll learn about the character Spock that we haven't learned before? I would really like to see the confrontational scene between Spock and his father when Spock decides to spurn his father's wishes and head to Starfleet Academy. I think it would be neat if we got a better understanding as to what actually inspired Spock to really WANT to join Starfleet. Was it just purely teenage rebellion on his part, did he think he'd just fit in better there, or were there any other factors?
