Spock as captain?

F. King Daniel

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I was wondering if any novels or comics had dealt with Spock's promotion to captain, and which featured him actually being the captain of the ship.

As far as I know, other than instructing cadets on the "teaching ship" Enterprise in TWOK, Spock commanded the USS Surak in the old DC comics and the USS Intrepid II in Vulcan's Forge, two Oberth-class science vessels. An alternate Spock was captain of the VSS ShiKahr in the weird Second History of Killing Time.

Anything else? Did he ever command the Enterprise on "proper" Trek missions?

The only work I know of that directly mentions Spock's promotion to command the Enterprise is "Mere Anarchy", in the Enterprise under Spock's command was assigned as Admiral Kirk's personal flagship as Commandant of Starfleet Academy, as a concession to Kirk for accepting the post.

A.C. Crispin's story in Enterprise Logs deals with the Enterprise under Spock's command on a diplomatic mission, though with a cadet crew.

Some of Strangers from the Sky involves Spock as Captain of the Enterprise.

The Pandora Principle, while Spock is the Enterprise's first officer at the time, shows Spock in command of a mission due to Kirk's stupidity. :)

Oh: Spock commanded the Enterprise for a year of the five-year mission while Kirk was lost in time according to "Mind Sifter" in The New Voyages.

Thanks, all. It seems really weird that such a big thing as Spock being promoted to captain of the Enterprise hasn't been the basis of a novel. At some point during TOS, Spock said he has no wish for command. He obviously had a change of heart.

I'm not anxious to pull the New Earth sextet out of storage, but I seem to recall that Spock had been promoted to Enterprise's captaincy, and Kirk was the admiral in charge of the mission as a whole. We never saw Spock operating independently, however.

Much of Mere Anarchy Book 4: The Darkness Drops Again is set during Spock's captaincy of the Enterprise, first on a mission with Admiral Kirk aboard and in charge of the overall mission, then later on his own during the time when Kirk was retired and living with Antonia (as seen in Generations).

New Earth actually had Kirk accepting another grade reduction to Captain to directly command the Enterprise, with Spock again serving as first officer. They both had larger roles as part of the overall mission, but Kirk was solidly in command of the Enterprise.
