Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Lucas

Re: Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Luca

I thought both Willow and Radioland Murders were very good, personally.

It kind of makes me wonder what the Star Wars movies would have been like if Lucas had given Spielberg at least one movie to direct, preferably one of the prequels. They'd likely be much better with his touch.

Sad to say, but sending Indy to Mars in some kind of John Carter-style adventure sounds exactly like the kind of thing Lucas WOULD do today.

Re: Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Luca

He's the greatest person I've ever worked with as a filmmaker collaborator and he's a conceptual genius.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about Lucas.. he has awesome ideas and puts them together well visually. This is but the one light within the prequels.. i love the visuals and the ideas behind them.. the podracers, the aliens, General Grievous design etc. This is where Lucas excels and where he's at the top of the heap.

I have a huge respect and admiration for Spielberg.. he is a master storyteller and has made several of my all time favorite movies including ET which was the very first movie i ever saw at the theatre when i was 7 and i can't imagine a better start to a movie career than this movie.

I don't have any problems with the new ET version and i own the the DVD because i understood the reasons, especially the change over from guns to walkie talkies but my respect even grow after reading the article where Spielberg openly admits he may have made a mistake and is willing to correct it.

He understands that even despite all the advances in SFX people have seen the original and it is this version they'll love forever.. even if they genetically engineered an ET creature to have a lifelike appearance onscreen we love this little puppet with all its imperfections because it's so much more than that.. it takes us back to the age we saw it first and lets us remember our childhood which we connect with that movie.

This is what Lucas just doesn't get with the original movies.. disregarding the more clunkier effects like Jabba or the new dance number in Star Wars the altered versions offer a broader and maybe more realistic visual than the original.. more starfighters attack the Death Star (it was always odd that it was just a dozen or so fighters) or the less lively streets of Mos Eisly but that's not the point. I grew up with those movies and i respect the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the people working on these movies to produce state of the art effects for their time and pushing the boundaries.
I love these movies and i just can't understand Lucas why he's so viciosuly opposed to release them properly and give them as a gift to the same fans who have made him rich and who adore his universe.

I just wish Lucas would stand at a Star Wars convention or anywhere else where people gather because of movies and have the guts to ask the audience the same question.. original or altered. I think the force of the soundwave screaming "Original" might knock him down ;)

Re: Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Luca

while Lucas is always very egotistical and defensive. In a Salon interview he even claimed critics have no education!

I think it is more along the lines of the fact that he doesn't care what others think. Do you have a link to that Salon interview? I did a google search and couldn't find the article in question.

it takes us back to the age we saw it first and lets us remember our childhood which we connect with that movie.

The special editions are 14 years old. There's nearly another generation who've grown up only knowing them.

Re: Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Luca

Spielberg said:
George does what he does because there's only one George Lucas, and thank god for that.

Lol.

It would have been a great start to his career. He had been around for a while though and had already made a name for himself with some other projects you may have heard of. Notably a few small projects like Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Jaws and Raiders of The Lost Ark. ;)

Re: Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Luca

Heh. He makes some good points (I always did think all that "myth" talk regarding the OT was way overblown), but it's kind of ironic this this analysis is JUST as pretentious and over the top. lol

Yeah, I'm not sure what the author was actually trying to prove that wasn't already known. Isn't it pretty much common knowledge that SW was influenced by several things beyond Campbell? The author comes off as wanting to villainize Lucas and like a whiny fanboy than a journalist.

Also, I didn't see the part where Lucas says that critics are uneducated.

Read that quote again, because Alpha wasn't trying to say what you think he was. ;)

Re: Spielberg speaks about ET, Indiana Jones Trilogy Blu-Ray, and Luca

I had no idea there ever was a "digitally remastered" version of ET in 2002. Shows how much of an impact (not) that one made. I don't even recall reading people complaining about it.

I just hope when the Blu-rays of Indiana Jones come out they aren't messed around with. If Indy doesn't shoot that guy with the sword first, I'll scream. ;)
