Spider-Man Fan Edit(s) Question and Movie Franchise Discussion
Hi everybody. I couldn't sleep last night so I popped in the special features disk for the Spider-Man 1 DVD, which got me thinking about my disappointment in the existing franchise being scrapped and a reboot being planned, and in turn got me thinking about my overall level of disappointment with the way that the existing trilogy ended. This in turn got me wondering if anyone had ever tried to do a 'fan edit' on any of the 3 Spider-Man movies, particularly Spider-Man 3, and I thought I'd come here and ask. Does anyone know of any fan edits out there that exist of any of the 3 Spidey movies, and, if so, does anyone know how I might go about finding them?
I'm also opening this thread to broad discussion about the 3 films as they exist, whether or not you're in favor of this reboot or if you would have rather seen Spider-Man 4, and any other movie-related discussion.
To start the discussion, I'm going to offer my own thoughts on Spider-Man 3:
I know many people consider the first Spider-Man film to be the best of the 3, but, for me, Spider-Man 2 blows the quality of the first film out of the water. The second film is so beloved by me that my disappointment with Spider-Man 3 is magnified because it really failed to live up to the legacy of the second film.
The primary reason for this, IMO, is that Ivan Raimi and Alan Sargent's script was so jam-packed full of stuff that things became 'storytelling mud' at a certain point, particularly with regards to the villain situation. Although I was and am not that familiar with the character of Sandman, the story that Ivan and Sargent came up with for him in the 3rd film was great, and really dovetailed well with the rest of the story, including Peter's discovery and embrace of the 'black suit'.
Where I feel that the filmmakers went wrong with the story is that they included things that were really just superficial, such as Captain Stacy and Eddie Brock becoming Venom. I'm well aware that Raimi caved to Avi Arad and added Venom, but I'm genuinely surprised that no-one who wasn't Arad picked up on the fact that his inclusion overloaded what was already a very full story to the point where things ultimately had to be rushed in order to get through everything.
If I were somehow able to turn back time and have some input on Spider-Man 3's story, I would have omitted Eddie Brock becoming Venom, and simply focused on Flint Marko/Sandman, Peter's issues with the 'black suit', and Harry's misguided search for retribution against Peter/Spidey. I also would have changed Harry's costume so that it was a mirror image of his father's costume (which I personally thought was kind of cool, for all it looked like something that the Power Rangers might wear).
