A bit of good news for folks wanting the specials in a box set: BBC Video has announced there will be a box set release for North America on Feb. 2 2010:

There's already been a report that the UK will see a box set release in January.

Even better news is that the set will indeed include The Next Doctor in both DVD and Blu-Ray editions. There was some talk around here about this not happening because of Next Doctor not being shot in HD, well :p !

No word on extras. I must assume the Proms concert (with the Music of the Spheres mini-episode) will be included. No word if they're including Dreamland (which I never thought likely anyway).

Including The Next Doctor with the other Specials is likely to intensify the fanboy debate over whether it counts as one of the specials (my personal opinion) or as a coda to Season 4 (which despite being the view put out by RTD makes no narrative sense).

EDIT: I just read the news item again and I'm actually going to step back from calling it a "box set". They're using the words "5-disc collection." That's not necessarily the same thing. They could simply be sellotaping the five releases together like has been done with other "collections". It will still be handy for getting all of them at once, but whether it'll be a formal box set as before, I actually can't tell from this item. This also leaves the question mark over whether Next Doctor will actually be up-converted to Blu-Ray or if they'll just be taking advantage of the players' backwards compatibility and including the standard DVD with the Blu-Rays, effectively creating a combo pak.

Great news! I'm sure it must be more than putting the 5 single releases into one package. As has mentioned here before, Tennant recorded video diaries for PotD, I believe, so I'm sure those will be included. Plus, there's gotta be commentaries!

If you want a coda to the fourth season, you need to read "The Time of My Life" in Doctor Who Magazine #399. That's the only coda you need. Even The Forgotten, which is itself an epilogue to the season, pales in comparison to "The Time of My Life." :)

I can see RTD's point of view, in the sense that he went from writing "Journey's End" to "The Next Doctor" without a break, despite being seriously ill at the time. And they went from filming "Journey's End" to filming "The Next Doctor."

Beyond the circumstances of production, then, there's no real connection between the two stories. The Doctor is in a far better place mentally in "The Next Doctor" than he was at the end of "Journey's End," which is why I'm glad the "link" scene for the end of "Journey's End" was cut. "The Next Doctor" isn't necessarily the next adventure; Lance Parkin's The Eyeless fits better in the immediate aftermath of "Journey's End" than "The Next Doctor," as do the two comics cited above.

The only way I can credit RTD's "coda" is if something in the final specials, in retrospect, puts a stronger link between "The Next Doctor" and the season that preceded it than the stories did themselves.

this could be quite a good boxset if you include EVERYTHING

The Next Doctor
Planet of the Dead
Music of the Spheres (clean, as seen on the BBC website)
The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith
Dreamland
and the two part finale

^ Is there an "unclean" version of Music of the Spheres? Is there swearing in that one or something?

sorry I should explain

when the concert was shown on TV, the mini episodes was shown from the POV of the audience, on a screen, and with shots to the crowd, which ruined it for me.
