Spartacus - second season not so certain anymore

With the recent worsening of Andy Whitfields health, the future of Spartacus - Blood and Sand is in jeopardy as well.
Whitfield has already dropped out of the show, so we won't be seeing him again there.
Now the question is, whether Starz will opt to recast him or simply cancel the show.

Aw hell, this is bad.
Over the course of season one I've grown extremely fond of that show and Whitfields performance.

Isn't it a third season that's questionable? I thought they were doing a second season as a prequel, with him doing a cameo, and it's already in the can?

Spartacus - Gods of the Arena is just a miniseries, supposed to bridge Whitfields recovery time.
It was never intended to be season two.

I don't like the show. However even if it was my favorite show ever I rather see it end than get recast. Plus I care more about Andy Whitfields than I do his lame show. He needs to fight and I'm glad to see he quit the show instead of trying to work half the time and trying to get healthy half the time.

I don't mean this as a joke but couldn't they just do something like the end of the movie where somebody else becomes Spartacus when the first guy gets killed in the ring?

Starz Considers Recasting “Spartacus"

The show has already taken one hiatus to wait for the star’s return. And with the actor on the sidelines acting-wise for the near future, the network is considering recasting his role according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Starz has started conversations with casting directors about finding someone to take over the role, reports James Hibbard. According to the report, the leading possibility would find the lead role recast with a new actor. Another scenario could involve a new actor and character taking and being the central character.
If no suitable candidate is found, Starz and producers may opt to delay or cancel production.

The decision to audition other actors was made in conjunction with Whitfield, who is said to support the series continuing forward.

Looks like they are thinking about recasting. This is probably what they should do.

Wait, why a recasting? His character is a gladiator -- give him an honorable and epic death and the show can organically move on.

Wentworth Miller is rumored to be in the running to take over the lead role.

WOW! Got a link? He'd be awesome and of course it would require him to hit the gym bigtime.

I agree, the original Spartacus should die. Yet his legend is too big to die, and someone else steps into his sandles. It's the kind of thing I'd expect to happen.

^ Any Google search on Miller will bring up a bunch of sites that are all reporting the same rumor.

"Spartacus is dead, but as a symbol we need him to live on. Billy Joe, you're the new Spartacus."
