Spoilers Space legends in Trek's world

F. King Daniel

An offhand mention by Scotty of a "giant green space hand" in Star Trek Beyond got me thinking about what legends might exist in Trek's world about some of the weird things that exist there. Another example is the "great bird of the galaxy" which turned out to be a real thing in the New Frontier novels. These space legends may not be 100% true, as we saw in early Next Generation the Ferengi were rumoured to be cannibals. There was also "Cyrus Ramsey" the transporter ghost from Enterprise's era (although this one may have been an hallucination), as well as a few legends about the Delphic Expanse. The fable (according to Spock) that God is real and lives on a planet in the centre of the galaxy from STV would definitely count too.

I thought it'd be fun imagining what space legends might exist in Trek's world.

I like to think every now and then there's a sighting of a 25-foot tall Spock clone somewhere in the galaxy, but no-one takes it seriously (TAS: "The Infinite Vulcan")

Fun topic. Certainly, Janeway seemed to regard some of Kirk's exploits as tall tales and legends, such as Kirk claiming to have met Da Vinci.

Maybe there's also a legend that Zefram Cochrane actually lived well into the 23rd century, kept alive by a sparkly alien being on a remote, uncharted planet . ...

Transporter ghosts would definitely be a common legend - humans have always been suckers for ghost stories,
I would imagine that there is also a few ghost ships - maybe one of them was the U.S.S. Franklin?

"Where Silence Has Lease"

WORF: My thoughts were of an old Klingon legend of a gigantic black space creature which was said to devour entire vessels.

Probably there aren't many: as soon as someone invented some new myth, Kirk and Co would found that it actually existed)

I liked that there was a conversation between Archer and Admiral Forrest on Enterprise establishing Cochrane's disappearance was considered one of the 22dn centuries greatest unsolved mysteries.

Wasn't there an early Enterprise episode where Mayweather told a ghost story about a haunted escape pod or something but T'Pol shot it down as illogical?

There was that legend about the Minnesota tribe that was spotted by several planets as it traveled along the edges of known space.

Legends of "lost colonies." In Terra Nova, Travis referred to them in the plural. And we see some of them in TAS and TNG.

Or one about a 50 foot Vulcan. Or a planet where wishes become real.

There was that legend about the Minnesota tribe that was spotted by several planets as it traveled along the edges of known space.

Apparently this tribe was fond of distributing hotdish, cream-of-mushroom soup and jello salad to passing starships. All exchanges of cargo were paid for by freewill offering.

Although there was one minor interstellar incident caused by the tribe's attempts to sell lutefisk to the Cardassian delegation.

To be fair, I can't imagine the Cardassians not loving lutefisk. Entirely understandable.

I could see some of the following being considered legends by the 24 century:

1. Events of Who Mourns for Adonais: I can see the debateL Was it really Apollo, or just an alien pretending to be one.
2. Events of Wolf in the Fold: Rejic turning out to be Jack the Ripper? @4th century historians would doubt it.
3. As mentioned already, Flint turning out to be a Highlander, and two of his aliases was Da Vinci, and Brams.
4. Savage Curtain: Obviously Kahless was depicted as how Kirk though of him being. Not how he was.
5. Voyager somewhat retcons the Borg as being a legend of sorts, when the Hansons were trailing them for study.
6. The preservers: Seems like Miri's planet, Magna Roma, Omega IV, the Native American planet from the Paradise Syndrome, and the Cowboy Planet from Enterprise were all possible examples of the Preservers transplanting humans to preserve humanity. Also, were the aliens from The Chase related to the preservers?
7. The Promellians: seemed a legendary race.
