Soy beans - the Food Industry Scam

I'm sure Soy beans are healthy and have a lot of valid uses, but as a commercial food item to stretch out real meat items?

I read the packages and refuse to buy any thing when Soy beans are the second or third ingredient. Most of the time if they are listed at all. I avoid Soy beans just like I try to avoid excess fat and sugars.

Are they really good for us? Or just the food industry?

Soy beans have complete protein, usually you have to combine grains and legumes to get complete protein with vegetables only.

They are a hardy crop and add nitrogen to the soil, so they are overall popular to grow.

If you enjoy Asian cuisine, there are a wide variety of products and flavours. The cheap Chinese brands I would stay away from, but there are as many (or more) flavours of Japanese Miso as there are western cheese, if you enjoy cooking at all, there are a wide variety of excellent soy products to choose from.

Soy contains decent amounts of calium, folic acid and iron, it has carbs and "good" fat, it has low to nil saturated fat. So it is a "better" replacement for meat, since getting an equal amount of protein from meat will give you a lot more saturated fat.

Soy is definately not a a "scam", it is healthy and economical to grow, and good for the soil so it has long term benefit for farming, as opposed to buying expensive fertilizer. But like any product, if it just ground and processed and mixed in bulk with another product, then it's it's just processed vegetable protein, there's nothing healthy or unhealthy about it. Like any product, if you buy a cheap brand with lots of additives, then you are getting lot's of additives.

If you have a taste for meat, meat and nothing but meat, then soy doesn't taste like meat, it tastes like something that tries to be like meat. But if you enjoy a variety of foods, then soy, miso, tofu, etc have their own distinct flavour that when cooked and spiced properly are fine tasting and fully nutricious and healthy.

In addition to what Lax posted, I believe I read that Soy milk is better for the human body than traditional cow's milk.

Slam dunk on the first reply and it's only AM here in North America. At ease soldier, you've done your duty for the day. :techman:

Three things I have to say about soy.

One. I like it. We had a recipe book one and it said how to make deep fried tofu with home made sweert and sour sauce, and it was delicious. I enjoy it in a number of things.

Two. However, no 2 son (19) has a kidney condition, we've just found out, and one doctor we took him to said he should have just some animal protein and no vegetable protein, which means primarily nuts (which he loves) and soy, which in one or or another is in just about everything these days.

Three. Some years ago, I had a stomach condition, and got used to soy milk. Love it on cereal. Trouble is, I've heard that hormones in it cause enlarged man-boobs. My moobs are big enough already! True or not?

Soya beans are one of my favourite foods. I love 'em. I eat quite a fair bit of soya, in the form of yoghurt and milk, too. I have heard recently, though, that there is a question over men eating too much soya. I'm not sure how true that is, though.

Ha ha, you're worried about soy beans being a scam, but not corn?

Corn is in the majority of the foods we eat. Everything from Ketchup to Peanut Butter. Corn has replaced the sugar in your coke and it's what makes most apple juices sweet. Due to the cow's all-corn diets, the meat in a McDonalds hamburger has more in common with corn, nutritionally, than you'd think.

But you're worried about soy beans?

If you only shop at all-organic markets then I might take your question seriously. But if you shop in normal grocery stores and eat fast food, it's bizarrely strange for you to be afraid of soy beans since you've already made the questionably-healthy choice of letting the food industry sustain you on a mostly-corn diet.

Soy doesn't have hormones. It does have some chemicals, and I forget the term unfortunately so I can't look it up, but they are natural and can act somewhat like hormones. An example is aloe, which when you rub it on a cut it has an activity similar to cortisone and speeds healing.

My understanding is, the chemical is a trace amount, so you would have to drink nothing but soy milk all day to get even a slight effect.

Take a look at asian countries where they drink lot's of soy milk, you don't see huge man-boobs everywhere.

It's probably true. Soy's phytochemicals act like estrogen; while no adverse effect is proven, during pregnancy or other imbalanced conditions, it may be better to not play with those hormone levels.

(The plant chemicals just attach to the hormone receptors is all).

As for Asia, it's not exactly testosterone central in the first place.

I enjoy soy beans, but I don't often buy them.

When I do have them, I tend to just boil them up and have them plain as they are, as a snack or mini-meal.

About corn and soy being used as fillers in some processed foods -- I think that tends to happen in america more than europe.

So while it's certainly not a scam food, it's how it's used that matters.

Ah, but they do. You just have to be a bit open minded.

I don't believe they are a scam, but they're not what I like to eat. Aside from that they make a heck of a degreaser and are now used as a paint additive and help reduce VOC emissions (if one cares about that).

Soy beans aren't a scam. I'm going to start a corporation selling them and Lentils as a new miracle food.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an oceanographic survey report to read.

That's not milk it's bean juice and my pediatrician vehemently disputes this nonsense.

Aside from that, I have no problem with soy. In fact I had can of vegetarian chili last night that had a grand total of 1.5 grams of fat and 220 calories per 1 cup serving. It was delicious and I had no idea there was no meat in it and I'm a hardcore red meat lover.
