Sophie Aldred and David Tennant to do voices for new animated series

The BBC Press Office has put out a cool bit of news for old and new Doctor Who Fans.

Cbeebies, which as I understand it is a kid's network run by the BBC, has announced production of a new half-hour animated series called Tree Fu Tom, which is aimed at the Age 4-6 crowd.

The lead character of Tom, according to the press release, will be voiced by Sophie Aldred, who we all remember as Ace during the McCoy era and the Big Finish audios, while David Tennant co-stars as Twig.

Apparently the idea of Sophie getting a lead role over someone of Tennant's stature got at least one Who fan blog confused and they assumed David got the title role. But I think it's fantastic that Sophie has been able to snag such a major part - and just a couple weeks before her 49th birthday too. True, it's "just" a kiddie show for Cbeebies, but it's also being produced by Freemantle which is the same company behind shows like American Idol and Pop Idol, so this will end up being syndicated all over the place (as indeed the press release indicates as much). And the fact it's got Tennant and Aldred places it above Boobah and Teletubbies; I'll certainly give it a peek if it shows up. Then again, I think Boobah is one of the funniest shows this side of Craig Ferguson, so what do I know? ;)

She does a lot of commercial voice overs too, she's probably one of the highest paid former companions in fact.

Cool she's working with David again, they worked together on Big Finish's Colditz.
