Sony eReader, Amazon Kindle, or something else?

I'm finally considering breaking down and buying an eBook device. The only two I know anything at all about are the Sony eReader (sold at borders) and the Kindle (sold at Amazon.com).

While I plan on doing more research, I thought I'd ask the helpful folks here: do you have a recommendation? Are there other brands I should be looking into? I'm trying to get as much info as possible.

Thanks in advance. :)

Here's a nice comparison table.

The iRex Iliad is the one with the ultimate geek value; it has the largest screen with the most colours, an integrated pen tablet (so you can use it for taking notes or annotate books as well as read them) and more connectivity than you can shake a stick at. iRex have also opened the software to third-party developers, meaning that, potentially, you can use it for many other applications as well.

It is also prohibitively expensive.

My guess is that the Amazon Kindle and Sony eReader are both nice devices, but heavily tied into their respective vendors' content services. That may be okay, if you're content with only getting your content from those vendors. (It's not like Amazon's selection is small). If not, then the Bookeen Cybook3 starts to look attractive.

at the prices these things running I think it would definitely make sense to wait until the second generation comes out

though personally I would rather read an actual book, but you gotta love the gadget factor of e-ink :D

For my wife's 30th b-day.. I bought her a Bookeen Cybook.. It works with Mobie format and i can download books from the ClevNet for rent just like at my local.. But in ebook format.. It's good to go..

I normally like gadgets bu I have to say none of the above. Why flop down so many greenbacks on something like this when you can go to the library for free? Even brand new books are only 20 or 30 bucks and thats better than 400.

I just dont think this tech will take off.

Well, for one thing my mom is not a "re-reader".. As in she reads a book once and thats it.. Two, it's WAAAAY easier to have six books on this thing then dragging around six books.... It was big $$$ but worth it for her... it's small light and easy to use..
