Look--Up in the sky!
It's a bird!
It's a plane!
It's a bunch of songs about Superman!

Which one saves your day?

If you chose "Other," please feel free to share (I'm sure I missed a few). But PLEASE NOTE: This is meant to be a poll of major pop songs that prominently reference or allude to the Man of Steel, not soundtrack material from actual Superman productions...so, for example, no John Williams score or YouTube parodies thereof, please.

So without further ado...Up, up, and away!

"Sunshine Superman," Donovan (1966)

* Good thing I took a look at the "explicit version" before deciding which one to post! :p

Hard to say. They're all pretty good. But I'd have to go with either Spin-Doctors or 3DD. I was a really big Doctors fan growing up, and I still think Pocket Full of Kryptonite is one of the best albums of the 90s. But if I had to pick, I'd probably say "Kryptonite." And speaking of great albums, I think Better Life is one of the few really good albums in an otherwise dead era of rock (late 90s/early 2000s).

The REM song is good, but they've had much better. And one of my childhood friends had a CTD phase. I heard that song--and 'Mmm', of course--over and over and over.

I used to really like the Five for Fighting song, but now it just makes me think of every Smallville fan video ever.

This was a tough one for me..."Sunshine Superman" is generally my favorite of those songs, but "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" almost got it for having more to do with Superman.

And here are some honorable mentions...songs that came to mind, but I chose not to include them in the poll for various reasons.

"Up, Up and Away," The 5th Dimension (1967)

It doesn't directly reference Superman, but it certainly evokes him with the prominent use of one of his most famous catchphrases.

"Rapper's Delight," The Sugarhill Gang (1979)

There's a section about Superman, that starts at around 5:19 in this version.

"Land of Confusion," Genesis (1986)

Superman is only briefly referenced in the song, but SuperRon gets more time in the video.

Funny..."Superman's Song" is one I hadn't heard of until I was Googling to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. (Definitely familiar with "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm," though...and the Weird Al parody, which was a hoot.)

I found it particularly interesting that they did a song and video based around the Superman's funeral just a year before the Death of Superman storyline. Gotta wonder if the song played a part in the inspiration....

I was a little disappointed, from the thread title it was about Metal songs.

I voted other for "What's Next to the Moon" by AC/DC.

"Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler which was used as the title song in the pilot episode of "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman".

"Land of Confusion" by Genesis with the lyrics "Superman where are you now
When everything's gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, men of power
Are losing control by the hour".

Guess we can declare a winner:

I think I'll have to go with the love theme from Superman Returns:
