Something just struck me about the redesign of the E

gastrof

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I was looking at the toy thread, and its pictures of the Enterprise. It struck me the ship gives the feel of a 1950s sportscar with big fins on the rear end. Maybe a subliminal connection to Kirk stealing and wrecking the car as a kid?

I know what you mean, but I was thinking they did it to give a subliminal hint that this is before the show you know, in a way. Since the original show is from the late 60s....the new ship has 50s hints to give that idea.

The Corvette Stingray is a 60's vintage though (63 - 67 to be precise)..

The new ship evokes more of a '57 Chevy or a 50's Caddy..

It's been identified as a '66 model -- the same year Star Trek went on the air.

There was a poster-type graphic someone made up last year, just after the first Enterprise pic was released, pointing out specific features on the ship and linking them to certain 50s and early-60s auto models from which they were supposedly nicked. It was a pretty nice job.

Edit:

Here's one, anyway - not sure if it's the same one I was thinking of:

I just found an article from SciFi Wire where they say that's exactly what they did.

Apparently JJ actually said that's what he wanted in the redesign.

"He wanted a hot-rod type of vehicle, but they also wanted to preserve the Enterprise kind of look....It's got this sweeping line that's kind of giving it this real hot-rod kind of car feel."

Oh well...

I'm the son of a race car driver so, naturally, I'm a car guy. It may well be the reason I loved the new E design from the start!
