Something I noticed about SG1 box set

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
I decided to go and buy the SG1 box set, complete with all 10 seasons plus Ark of Truth and Continuum, and as it was going for £130 a guessed it'd be good deal.

I noticed that the disc sets in the 1st season are labeled Disc 1 to Disc 5 (as you'd normally find) but when you get into season 2 onwards the discs are then labeled from volumes 2 to 54, like they were meant for individual sets. Add to that the episodes Thors Hammer and Hathor are included on both the 3rd disc of season 1 and the last disc of season 2 after the season finale Out of Hand.

So far I've only checked through the 1st and 2nd season but it seems weird that whole set has been arranged like this.

Has anyone else had a box set like this?

I just assumed they used disks from previous season box sets that were in a warehouse somewhere that weren't packaged to be sold and designed the big gold box to hold them all . . .
what are there, about 55 disks in that set? I think it would have been absurd to make a new run of that many disks . . . better to use leftovers from previous seasons' runs

BTW this is one of my favorite box sets
you open one of the disk books and it just keeps folding out again and again :D
and the gold box with the little gate on front is pretty cool too

You must have a different set to me, or at least a different Box cover. This is the one that I got:

Not as cool as the one you're talking about I take it?

That's much better, in my opinion. The region 1 version just would not hold up well to repeated viewings. Reminds me of the Babylon 5 packaging ... not designed well for continuous disk movement. lol

I don't know about that, some of the "teeth" in the inner disc holders were already broken when I recieved it meaning that DVD's move about in the inside if the box is moved about.

Its because they are the same discs from when the series was released as individual season box sets, which in turn after series 1 were just the individual volumes packaged together.

So series 1 you got disc 1-5, but after that its by volume. The reason why series 1 is different is because in the UK, it was never released individually. Instead we got a best of selection for the first disc that counted as volume 1.

Indeed. Although Season 1 was later released as a box set when those became fashionable, originally only a 'best of' disc was released that was volume #1, then volume #2 was the first disc of season 2.
The last discs of seasons 2 and 3 also contain season 1 episodes as 'bonuses' on my box sets, for this reason.

ah the regional differences didn't occur to me!
here's the one I have:

That's the one for sale in the US, isn't it? I didn't know it included the TV-Movies. Or were there multiple versions of the US set? If the latter, how can you tell which is which (if you're ordering by mail)?

In fact, I just browsed Amazon.com to find this, and their listing for the set does not mention the TV-Movies at all.

^ I did.

But I also just remembered that the TVM's are available on Blu-Ray anyway, so it really doesn't matter. :alienblush:

Plus, from reading the comments, it seems that the packaging for the US set is rather threadbare and prone to damaging the disks. So I would probably just go with the individual season sets.

If you do, try to find the newer, single-snap-case versions that just came out this year. Each season fits in to one case, and they're selling for roughly $20 and take up WAY less shelf-space than any of the sets that came before.

I have this one too, haven't noticed any doubles yet, but then we're only about halfway through the first season...

Are those the same as the ones now being sold as "Thinpaks" on Amazon?

I'd imagine the thinpacks are the ones that came out with Season 9, with each season being three thinpack cases, with one or two discs in each one. This sounds like the entire season is in one container. And at twenty bucks a pop, that doesn't sound too bad (though it doesn't solve the problem that I have seasons three and eight in the giant, one-full-sized-case-per-disc packaging).
