Something Else I am Playing with...

I call this the "Double-D" or Double Daedalus. I was thinking of a remnant refit of the Daedalus that would be the last ditch effort for the Daedalus design firm who first put out the design in order to keep her as a relevant part of the fleet. The firm would propose this last refit as a cost effective redesign.
I was inspired by the Zweiling of WW2 Luftwaffe and the F-82 Twin Mustang for this.
Enjoy mates :)

I'm taking a liking to that concept in the middle of your first image. It really has an ENT feeling to it that I dig. Speaking of that image... the bottom one made me realize that a double hulled Daedalus could be used as a testbed for the first Dreadnought type with three nacelles...

The double hull lends itself to the nacelle pylons coming straight out from between them, rather than that awkward angle up from the bottom.

Oh man! I love that!

More! :D

More is on the way :D

Really lovely design! The additions really balance the design out very nicely!
Thanks

Interesting. I am getting a Bender Bending Rodriguez vibe from it.
LOL, definitely not a bad thing. :D

Awesome design concept really liking that last image :)
Thanks :)

I can show you many "sphere ships" that I have played with...that little doodle is but a small sample. The idea of a dreadnought Daedalus or even it leading to the TOS Dreadnought-type in general is an intriguing one :)

I do not believe that they are awkward in the least...In my opinion, if they just came straight out they would be rather boring, and extremely geometric in it's simplicity. The Aft 3/4 shot is what sells it. Furthermore, should the ship be shown in a flyby, banking, the pylons being angled upward from the belly belies a sense of grace...again in my opinion. :)

Graceful, agreed. :) Functionally, however, I think the configuration @FormerLurker is talking about would provide easier access to the nacelles from either of the secondary hull sections - and might provide a way to separate either of the two secondary hulls in an emergency (or intentionally, as a cargo, colony pod, station component, or troop drop) without losing the nacelles from the ship.

It's your design of course, and I like it (as usual), so do what you will. But if you want to play with the idea of the pylons being connected in the middle, maybe try connecting them at the front of the part between the two secondary hulls and swooping them *back*? Or, even as-is, but moved to connect to that section instead of to the bottom hull?

Yep you are correct Except that it's not about functionality in a fiction based universe...if you are looking for functionality (as we understand it)in Trek, then the ships would look nothing like they do in the first place. The simple aspect that space is not considered the most hostile environment the we know of or that the average person lives and thrives in it means that functionality can give way to style, as it often does in every aspect of technology that becomes more commonplace. And in Trek this is constantly shown to be the case. :)

How about a design with two spheres?
I've done a couple of doodles with that :) i'll have to dig them up...If I remember correctly, the layout was as such that the spheres side by side. with a hull in the middle.

Great work! That definitely looks like a refit the Daedalus design team would propose to extend the service life of the Daedalus class and to use any remaining hulls. It could even be why we got the two terms "engineering hull" and "secondary hull".

A beautiful upgrade.

Hell, a design-wide refit could have made them all modular and pods could be added top and/or bottom of the original secondary hull.

Keeping the warp engines where they were on the original would reinforce the idea that it's a refit rather than a new ship.

Hmm, I would add two more engine pylons coming from the upper hull and maybe make the nacelles a bit larger, two engine room, twice the power, faster ship?

Great successor to the Daedalus Class :)
Thanks!

Very nice indeed.
Thank you.

Awesome! double the hulls double the fun!:mallory::techman:
lol

Aye, great analogy :)
Thanks!

Loving the design mate!!! Keep up the amazing work.

I thought about that, but seeing how SF Starships are so modular I felt It would work...so I kept it :)
"story-wise" I envisioned the design firm going way over budget with this proposal...As they did so much to the ship's components that the spaceframe became a new ship altogether. Therefore over budgeting the ship proposal, and not being that much cheaper than what the newer and more versatile Connies would be. Although only 2 prototypes were built, and they would see active service, they never would achieve the service distinction that the Connies did. Instead, they were relegated as a curiosity in the annals of Starfleet's history.

The "dorsal hull" is a Shuttlebay, machine shop and cargo hold, while the "ventral hull" housed main engineering and impulse assembly.
