Something about Q

MolNow

Ensign
Newbie
Something that I think was pretty obvious when I signed up here is that I really like Q. I have read all the books and I love watching the episodes. Q is seen in different series, and I think that there is a reference to the Q in the original series. It would be nice to meet John De Lancie he is a really good actor and good looking. I do like the next generation a lot and i think Q adds a lot to the story. It would be nice to meet other people who would want to talk about the continuum and Q. Is anyone elsewhere on here a Q fan?

Big Q fan here! Q sometimes seems more akin to the Norse legend of Loki, a chaotic neutral figure who would sometimes do good and sometimes do bad. Often with a lesson for Picard (esp. season 2 onward but there was plenty of room for character growth, and Q spoonfeeding too much exposition to the audience in his first story would be counterproductive. Plus, with Q, never take 'im at face value and that's part of the fun!)

See my sig line for a link to Q, but here's another good'un: https://www.inverse.com/culture/star-trek-the-next-generation-35-anniversary.

Roddenberry had to do something to meet the TNG premiere's newly-made edict for being 2 hours. He created, as bookends, the trial, featuring Q and using inspiration from Trelane (much to the chagrin of others, despite Q not having nuclear family parents and a more complex undercurrent!) - this definitely made the premiere more interesting, and John DeLancie's casting was nothing less than inspired. (He even had a scene in "Q Who" changed, to say "Oh please" instead of ranting to Picard in the conference room. Like Michael Dorn for Worf, DeLancie took a character outline and made far more out of it. :luvlove: )

It's amazing. Q was in 8 TV TNG stories and 0 TNG movies but feels like he's been there longer or even integral.

My username is in homage to Q as well, "Qonundrum".

I like connect-the-dots and have always wanted to draw together human psi-potential, the barrier, gary mitchell and others ascending, Trelane's / Q's fascination with Earth history, and Q's personal interest in humanity all into one story.

Love the character and the actor!
He adds so much.
Did not do the math on this, but love knowing it!!!

Plus, one of my first computers was a Compaq Pressario…these were the instructions - the OP will certainly enjoy this!!!

I wouldn't call that CGI any worse than what's made today. If, for no other reason, it's using a wider color palette than just the dank orange and teal puke. Given the limited technology of the time, you'd think it'd be the other way around! :guffaw:

It's interesting to view Q's interactions throughout TNG, and even though Picard and the crew regard him as a nuisance, it's arguable that he's both performing the Continuum's trial of humanity but he's trying to help them, and the closest thing we have to an advocate within the Continuum. I think Q has genuine affection for Picard, and at the end of "All Good Things..." he admits that he did his best to help Picard out of the problem, even though he was ordered to put them into it in the first place by the Continuum.

If I remember right, John De Lancie once a gave an interview where he says he based Q on Lord Byron, and the quote about him that Byron was "mad, bad, and dangerous to know."

i also think that the emotional vulcans from ENT, sybok, sevrin, the way to eden, the magicks of megas tu, and Star Trek V should all be part of one narrative.

unclear on if i think they should be connected to the Q.

i would also connect city on the edge of the forever to the creation of the mirrorverse, and the original naked-time/tomorrow is yesterday connection. you cuold probably connect assignment earth too.

Then doomsday machine, the aliens from DSC04, the borg, v'ger, nomad, machine planet, Decker/Ilia ...

maybe that was the WRONG way to ascend, and corrupted the path to the Q, and created the Borg instead. maybe thats why Q was so concerned with it all.

just babbling while at work here. this is the literal example of my being able to type as fast as i can think lol.

Because I couldn't find any clips of Mr DeLancie from "Get Smart, Again", I took a random clip from the 1989 reunion movie instead:

Also, here's another fun article discussing DeLancie's one itty bitty gripe with PIC:
