I thought it would be fun since we are all getting our collective selves all hyped up for a new TREK flick to turn back the hands of time to 2002.
I went back to various sources and culled these remarks after we fans saw the trailers for Nemesis...they really are cute considering what the film turned out to be.
"Personally, I've never seen a trek trailer as remotely visually exciting. It revolved around the major themes in the movies and still left plenty of time for what we all wanted to see in the last movie..that was grand. political/military thriller."
"... K-19 was and is still good. Now to my surprise I did get to see the Nemesis preview and I must say WoW! Put a side the wedding and the guess stars that preview was kick ass! ...Things looked real gritty and in your face tuff Nice shuttles too. Man Next Gen may really be going out with a bang."
"That trailer brought the house down; no question about it. My buddy, who isn't even a fan of Trek, but just happened to drop by during ENT, looked over at me after the trailer was finished and said, "That was fucking awesome!!". Damn right."
"Does Star Trek: Nemesis stand a good chance of possibly being the best ST film ever? Why or Why not? And if not, which one does deserve to be called the best? I think it does. Not only because of the images that have been released, but because we have a writer (John Logan) who's not only a fan, but is aware of the potential scope of a film. (He did help write the screenplay for Gladiator.) I thought that when the project was greenlighted, it would be OK. When I saw the trailer, I thought this film had the POTENTIAL to be the best ST film. Now, I'm positive that this will be Star Trek's finest hour."
...and lastly, someone without rose colored glasses:
... This may be a great action movie, but in the scheme of things it is a recycling of what has come before, regardless of how well it may be done. Being the best of the bunch requires the script be the best as well. That said, I still am not overly impressed with the visuals, which still look not enough removed from a glorified tv episode instead of looking like a Ridley Scott film as described by Rick "It's wonderfull" Berman. The sets are pretty modest in scale, the special fx not terribly complicated and not particularly convincingly executed. This would've been a little more impressive a decade ago (and only just a little) but it just does not compare to what is considered to be theatrical level film making in the year 2002. Much is being made of the space battles, but really, they don't look as good as the truly awesome battles featured on DS9. So far I haven't seen anything that took my breath away like when I first saw TMP or the Mutara Nebula. There's definitely room for improvement here...
