Some perspective - what we thought after NEM trailers

I thought it would be fun since we are all getting our collective selves all hyped up for a new TREK flick to turn back the hands of time to 2002.

I went back to various sources and culled these remarks after we fans saw the trailers for Nemesis...they really are cute considering what the film turned out to be.

"Personally, I've never seen a trek trailer as remotely visually exciting. It revolved around the major themes in the movies and still left plenty of time for what we all wanted to see in the last movie..that was grand. political/military thriller."

"... K-19 was and is still good.

Now to my surprise I did get to see the Nemesis preview and I must say WoW! Put a side the wedding and the guess stars that preview was kick ass! ...Things looked real gritty and in your face tuff Nice shuttles too. Man Next Gen may really be going out with a bang."

"That trailer brought the house down; no question about it. My buddy, who isn't even a fan of Trek, but just happened to drop by during ENT, looked over at me after the trailer was finished and said, "That was fucking awesome!!". Damn right."

"Does Star Trek: Nemesis stand a good chance of possibly being the best ST film ever? Why or Why not? And if not, which one does deserve to be called the best?

I think it does. Not only because of the images that have been released, but because we have a writer (John Logan) who's not only a fan, but is aware of the potential scope of a film. (He did help write the screenplay for Gladiator.)

I thought that when the project was greenlighted, it would be OK. When I saw the trailer, I thought this film had the POTENTIAL to be the best ST film.

Now, I'm positive that this will be Star Trek's finest hour."

...and lastly, someone without rose colored glasses:

... This may be a great action movie, but in the scheme of things it is a recycling of what has come before, regardless of how well it may be done. Being the best of the bunch requires the script be the best as well.

That said, I still am not overly impressed with the visuals, which still look not enough removed from a glorified tv episode instead of looking like a Ridley Scott film as described by Rick "It's wonderfull" Berman. The sets are pretty modest in scale, the special fx not terribly complicated and not particularly convincingly executed. This would've been a little more impressive a decade ago (and only just a little) but it just does not compare to what is considered to be theatrical level film making in the year 2002. Much is being made of the space battles, but really, they don't look as good as the truly awesome battles featured on DS9. So far I haven't seen anything that took my breath away like when I first saw TMP or the Mutara Nebula. There's definitely room for improvement here...

That was interesting :lol::bolian:

By the way here's some "not so rose colored glasses" reaction for Trek XI too

http://trekmovie.com/2009/03/07/new-star-trek-trailer-a-big-hit-with-the-media/

…no matter how rad you think that the new Star Trek trailer that you’re about to watch looks on your computer monitor, we guarantee it will look approximately 1,000 times more impressive when viewed on the big screen. As the tagline attests, this trailer gives some additional clues and insight into the rebellious Captain Kirk’s backstory, and goes a long way towards setting the table for Captain Kirk to have his very own Inigo Montoya moment with an evil Romulan played by Eric Bana. We are SO there.

[headline] Sorry to say it, but the new Star Trek film looks fantastic
Paramount is tampering with the natural order of things. Not content with one fabulous Star Trek movie in 1996, they are now, it seems, giving us another.
- Daily Telegraph (UK)
Beam me up already. The latest and most awesome trailer is opening screenings of “Watchmen” in theaters this weekend. I can only imagination how amazing it looks on the big screen. I’m giddy as a schoolgirl watching it on my computer—for the 20th time.

[headline] New ‘Star Trek’ trailer: Beam me the frak up, right bloody now
There are some who raise a great hew and cry over J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, and the more they see, the louder their protestations will get. They’re too young, the Enterprise looks like a flourescent hospital, why is Jim Kirk astro-base-jumping? For them, Star Trek will always be William Shatner, strutting around in those little booties, performing yellow-belt karate chops on aliens dressed like Romans. But for the rest of us — people who can handle a new Battlestar Galactica, a new James Bond every 10 years, and new underpants…
Holy s#!+.

- Entertainment Weekly

I will admit, I am not a fan of the Star Trek series. I don’t dislike it per se, I just never really got into it. But this new flick releasing on [May 8th] includes so many of my favorite actors including Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Zoe Saldana that I am rethinking this whole Star Trek thing.

Those must have been the exceptions. Because I remember most being pretty unimpressed by the NEM trailers when they came out. I know I certainly was.

And the audiences I saw it with were openly groaning over it and mocking it everytime it played. lol

That's a great find (those old Nemesis posts). The one thing is that I have more trust in the people making this one. But I do worry that the last 20 minutes of the film is a race against a ticking clock to stop the bad guy's bad machine. I hate those kind of endings!

For yet more perspective, lets see how rubbish the Nemesis trailer actually was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FckGQzqXgpE

It could be a trailer for a TV episode when compared to the new movies. Massive difference in scope, scale and quality. Star Trek ain't had a trailer like this latest one before, it even stands out against those of other blockbuster films. Lets hope the movie lives up to it though.. it's causing a lot of hype. :p

I take it you didn't like,''The Wrath of Kahn'' than?

I remember the majority, including myself being very impressed with the Nemesis trailers because they were the best Trek ones that had ever been released. Unfortunatley looking back on them now, they're synonimous with recent Trek movies, low-budget and niche.

The actual Nemesis trailer is awful in my opinion. A complete mess of shots, with no real pacing and convincing drama. The on-screen text is very sloppy and fan-boyish and the "music" is headache-inducing as well.

I have to admit that the Nemesis trailer looks absolutely crappy compared to any of the IX trailers.

Oh, I admit that I liked one of the Nemesis spots. But I also had reports about the actual quality of the film at the time that tempered any possible hope that they film would be good.

With this we not only have 3 spots that I so far truly enjoyed (never has happened with Trek) we have in general rather glowing reports over a large chuck of footage that we haven't seen, from both diehards and people who don't know a phaser from a light saber. That is also something new.

Am I going to like it? Who knows. But at this stage the inside information is more glowing then any other Trek film since I started following Trek posts on the usenet.

The Nemesis trailer and movie were both the most expensive and largest scale of the movies since STTMP, there's no denying that. There's also no denying a lot of trek fans hated it. I personally have no problems saying its in my top 5 Trek movies. It has flaws but fewer than half of the movies and well, it does look better than almost all of them.

The new movie has fresh blood and a bigger budget. The decisions on the whole production and its overall tone have to be different because the production team is different. I think that's obvious from the choices made so far that we have seen. I think its erroneous to compare them any further just because Nemesis also upped the scale one level and the new movie does the same.

On May 8th I'm going to go down the street, sit down in a big theater and enjoy the hell out of this movie. Folks who prefer to fret and guess and develop anxiety about it in the meantime are welcome to that noise.

I remember the nemesis trailer.....it was a pile of rubbish.....something about our eyes in the darkness or some other mumbo jumbo that Berman thot up in the middle of making out with Braga

Shinzon was wooden, one could ascertain that from the trailer
Picard was acting as if he was the last action hero, by that time Stewart had lost all perspective and gone was the guy from next gen

That trailer was ure basic generic action sci fi trailer.......and the icing on the cake ---- who can forget the tacky techno music in the background during the action sequences, a piece ure more likely to hear at a washed up night club

I agree, I am going to enjoy the movie as well. I just thought it would be fun to look back at the time leading up to the last movie to see what fans were thinking. For one I am stoked for the new movie and I agree TREK has not seen the sort of budget and the trailer shows that at least in some areas, it appears well spent.

Well, of all the parts of TWOK, the race against the clock would probably be near the bottom of the list of good things about it. There's too much else going on.
What I meant was like lots of Roger Moore James Bond endings...nothing new happens in last 20 minutes...just stop the machine and kill the bad guy.

I have to admit that the Nemesis trailer looks absolutely crappy compared to any of the IX trailers.

:) Agreed.

I will also be at the theater for the release. I am definitely going in with a more open mind after this latest trailer. I'm gunning for the midnight release if I can get a ride... :D

Yeah well, I actually liked NEM a little bit, more than 66% of the other TNG movies... but still, that trailer is very run-of-the-mill. I had forgotten about it completely. The new one is on a different scale. That's safe to say.
