So what's unanswered (spoilers to end of season 5)

Hunter X

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
All right, so we have five down, one to go! What nagging questions are still on your mind? Big or little ones, list them all.

I was glad for the call-back to Charlie's ring being left in the crib, largely because I just watched Greatest Hits two nights ago with my girlfriend, but now I'm wondering since they picked up on it again if it'll ever make its way to Aaron.

See? I started little. ;)

What's Widmore's role in the rest of the story? He seems like small fry now. So does Ben.

Does Desmond still have a part to play? Eloise mentioned that the island isn't done with him, but his story seems done, and it seems like he was only kept around for season five to wrap up some loose threads (like Ben's vow to kill Penny).

What's Richard's deal?

Will Locke come back to life for real? I hope so. His character sure got a crappy deal if he doesn't get to come back and get a little payback on EvilLocke for the manipulation and destruction of his life.

Okay, enough from me. Oh, but the first person who mentions Libby gets pushed down a pit full of electromagnetic energy. :p

1. What/Who is Jacob?
2. Who is Jacob's enemy?
3. What's up with Locke?
4. Is Juliet alive?
5. Where did everyone end up?
6. What's Richard's deal?
7. How was Eloise in Desmond's flashback?
8. How does Hurley talk to dead people?
9. What is the "loophole?"
10. Is the smoke monster / Jacob's enemy the same thing?
11. What happens when Jacob touches you?
12. What's in the guitar case?
13. Who are Ilana and Bram?
14. What the hell was Christian doing shacking up in Jacob's cabin?
15. What's up with the ash?
16. Where is Claire?
17. What could Frank be a candidate for?
18. What was Ilana doing in that hospital (which looked like a triage unit?)
19. What was Chang doing with that guy's corpse at the Orchid?
20. How did Ethan become a member of the others?
21. How is Walt "Special?"
22. How did the Others save little Ben?
23. What's up with women not being able to give birth on the island? Is this because of the incident.
24. The Black Rock
25. Adam and Eve
26. The temple
27. The supply drop

Sigh...

While all those above questions are ones I really want to see answered the big one that worries me is:

Will John Locke, in some form, return?

Just random thoughts:

9. What is the "loophole?"

That Jacob's enemy (the other guy on the beach) can't kill Jacob himself?

10. Is the smoke monster / Jacob's enemy the same thing?

That's what I'm thinking--and it's the Locke we've been thinking was alive

12. What's in the guitar case?

Something key to Jacob's needs?

13. Who are Ilana and Bram?

Jacob's minions?

14. What the hell was Christian doing shacking up in Jacob's cabin?

He's Smokey?

15. What's up with the ash?

It was either to keep Jacob in or keep Smokey out, likely trap Jacob--which is why he "asked" Locke to "help him."

20. How did Ethan become a member of the others?

Ben took Ethan with him?

22. How did the Others save little Ben?

They "dedicated" him to Jacob?

25. Adam and Eve
As far as I'm concerned, "The Incident" confirmed that Bernard and Rose become Adam and Eve.

I took that as confirmation, too. I don't think we'll ever see Bernard and Rose again (and will they keep Vincent? probably).
23. What's up with women not being able to give birth on the island? Is this because of the incident.
When Tawaret (the statue) gets blown up (I expected it to happen in the S5 finale!) the protection she conveys to pregnant women will be lost.

I really want to know how Tawaret gets blown up! Or pushed over, or whatever happens.

I think Jacob somehow trapped his nemesis in the cabin and held him there with the ash. It was he who asked for Locke's help that time. When the ash was disturbed (did we ever see how that happened?) he was freed and able to start planning to take advantage of his loophole.

3. What's up with Locke?
We know the answer to this. He's dead. He died when Ben strangled him.

7. How was Eloise in Desmond's flashback?
It wasn't a flashback. He was sent back in time. But it's a good point. Why was she there, how did she get there, why was she the same age as when we saw her in 2007, how did she know Desmond was there? I've been wondering this since the episode aired. In the season three commentary for the episode, Damon Lindleof describes her almost as some sort of temporal cop.

8. How does Hurley talk to dead people?
I don't think he does. Like all the other dead people, it's the Adversary trying to get Hurley to do what he wants. With Hurley, it's easier for the Adversary, because he has a history of seeing things that aren't there.

And if that's the case, it makes me wonder -- was Dave, Hurley's imaginary friend, yet another form of Esau, the Adversary? Dave tried to get Hurley to kill himself on the island. Does Hurley have a much bigger destiny than we thought?

9. What is the "loophole?"
Esau couldn't just kill Jacob. He needed to find a loophole in the rules, and he engineered it with John's death and getting Ben to kill Jacob. The question is, who writes these rules in the first place.

10. Is the smoke monster / Jacob's enemy the same thing?
The smoke monster, Christian, and all the dead people are all one and the same.

I think.

We'll have to wait until next season to know for sure, but it seems pretty clear to me that this is the case. The only thing making me second guess that assumption is that Smokey often seems quite mechanical in nature and severely limited in his abilities. A 1970s fence keeps him at bay? He comes like an animal when summoned?

But all the clues seem there this season. Ben was with fake-Locke he tried to summon Smokey. But Smokey wouldn't come, because he was right there with Ben the whole time. Then fake-Locke conveniently says, "Wait a second Ben, I know where Smokey lives. Let's go." Ben then falls through the ground by himself and meets Smokey. Smokey as Alex tells him to do everything Locke says. Smokey then disappears and fake-Locke pops up right afterward.

Also, we hear the smoke monster noise right before Christian appears to Sun and Frank. He tells them to wait for John Locke to show up and lead them, then he disappears, and Ben and John arrive.

14. What the hell was Christian doing shacking up in Jacob's cabin?
Chrisitan, Locke, Esau, Smokey, and all the apparitions of dead people we've ever seen are all one and the same.

Maybe.

15. What's up with the ash?
It holds something or someone inside it.

27. The supply drop.
I really want to know about this.

3. What's up with Locke?
We know the answer to this. He's dead. He died when Ben strangled him.

And something has formed an apparition of him on the island that acts exactly like him?
Yes, exactly. The guy from the beginning with Jacob. When they were sitting on the beach watching the ship. The guy who told Jacob he really wanted to kill him. That guy took on Locke's appearance and manipulated Ben into murdering Jacob.

I've got another:

Will Desmond's vision of Claire getting onto a helicopter with Aaron ever come to pass in some form? It would be a strange inconsistency if that was his one vision that was wrong, especially with "whatever happened, happened." It's also the whole reason Charlie sacrificed himself, so I think some closure on this one would be nice.

Maybe it was really Kate. Maybe he "saw" a woman holding Aaron and just assumed it was Claire (as most people would). If they never come back to this one it won't bother me too much. :)

the blonde vs brunette thing would be kind of a giveaway as to which woman was getting on the chopper, though...

Maybe Desmond was lying. He saw himself on the helicopter and knew what he would have to tell Charlie to get him to sacrifice himself. Or maybe it was the Adversary giving Desmond the visions.

The thing that's still a mystery to me is Ben's motiviations during season 2 when we was in the Hatch. Clearly we know now he must have pushed the button at the last second, then lied and told John he didn't. Did he also cut the power? Why? Why did he then try to get John not to push the button? So all hell could break loose and he could make his escape? He could have escaped the first time when John was trapped. Hell, he could stayed long enough to push the button and then escape.

He may have thought his story was going to check out and pushed the button at the last second so that just in case his story didn't check out, he could then tell John he didn't push the button and nothing happened. But that then means he wanted to be there. What was his purpose there in the first place?

I guess it was all in one of Jacob's little notes. Poor Ben was probably thinking the same thing all along: "WTF am I doing here anyway?" :D

He may have thought his story was going to check out and pushed the button at the last second so that just in case his story didn't check out, he could then tell John he didn't push the button and nothing happened. But that then means he wanted to be there. What was his purpose there in the first place?

In "Expose" he and Juliet talk about how they're going to use Michael to bring back Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley, so clearly he's planning something along the lines of what we saw before he even gets captured. Whether he meant to be captured by Rousseau, or if he was going to infiltrate the camp by another means, I suspect we'll never know. I'm leaning towards the idea that his capture wasn't part of whatever original plan he had, and he improvised. On the other hand, we've seen that he's been willing to be used as a punching bag in his plans before (fooling Jack into thinking he killed Sayid, Bernard and Jin; giving himself up to Keamey). He must've always been planning to use the Henry Gale cover either way, though, seeing he had so much information about the hot air balloon and such.

When it comes down to it, I suspect it was all just an over-elaborate plan to get Jack, Kate and Sawyer. He also might have known about Locke and his specialness, seeing as Richard did, so he may have also been wanting to scout this guy out, get inside his head, mess with him a bit.

The fact that it has such gaping holes in it is fairly typical for our Lost friends, though. I mean, I still can't quite get over Jack and Sayid's plan at the end of season 2: "Michael's leading us into a trap! The best way to foil him is to do exactly what he says. In the mean time, you guys go off in the boat around the island for a sneak attack! Signal us that you're there with some black smoke. That way they'll know we're coming. You know, for our sneak attack. It'll be so sneaky and clever. I can't see how it'll fail."
