So the Cardassians did joined the Federation after all

There's so much we don't know about the galaxy in the 32nd century. So many different species seen in the 22nd/23rd/24th centuries could be members of the Federation or extinct for all we know. I hope the series starts to flesh out the new setting as this season was tightly focused on finding the cause of the Burn, the threat of the Emerald Chain, and saving Georgiou.

I like the idea that Bajor, Cardassia, and Ferenginar all eventually joined the Federation. Until DIS contradicts it, it's my headcanon that after the Burn, Cardassia, Bajor, and Ferenginar have maintained a mini-Federation that's out of contact with Federation Headquarters but ready to reunite once warp travel becomes routine again.

I would love a reference book like the atlas of the Federation and galaxy books that came out in the 90s, but all about the 32nd century. It wouldn’t even have to cover stuff on the show, although some hints are future stuff would be nice. But I’d love to know about other parts of the galaxy. What are the Borg up to? What’s going on in the Delta Quadrant? Is Mars still burning? Whatever happened to Janeway and Paris’ post-human salamander triplets and did they build a civilization that is so beautiful that beings such as we would weep at its majesty?

There's a short story called On the Rocks included in the anthology Strange New Worlds V that is told from the perspective of the salamander triplets after they were abandoned on the planet. You might be interested in picking the book up.

I would be surprised if they did not, their joining the dominion was a huge mistake which they can blame on their right wing culture. Joining the Federation, a left wing organization would ensure this doesn't happen again.

Probably could come out after they iron out the details. 32nd century just started recently so not enough time.

The Dominion nearly exterminated all of them and took all of their resources. Its not surprising that they would eventually join the Federation as they are extremely vulnerable now more than ever. Dukat was the worst thing to happen to Cardassia. They would need Federation guidance in case hostile aliens decide to colonize Cardassia.

iirc the Dominion killed 800 million on the assault on the planet, I would think that’s probably just a fraction, albeit a significant one.

Originally I thought Admiral Vance would turn out to have Borg ancestry, that the Borg effectively were no longer a threat and over generations had somewhat 'assimilated' back into the galaxy. Whether it be a one off event that decimated them or simply that the Alpha Quadrant powers became more technologically advanced in the 25th century with quantum torpedos and reprogramming nanoprobes they effectively became stalemates, and over time the Borg found it more difficult to expand their influence on the galaxy and turned in on themselves.

Cardassia I can see joining the Federation pretty soon after DS9 to be honest. Or at least some kind of protectorate first, with massive help in rebuilding their society decimated by the Dominion. Fereginar would have to undergo a massive change in their culture to become Federation members; and end to capitalism and the free market. Rom's political movement may have only been the very beginning of such a fundamental change that I can't see completing for a good 500 years or so.

Originally I though Federation HQ would be Qo'nos, but looking back that would be too much of a stretch. What would be interesting to see if any powers that we saw in the 24th century as lesser to the Federation are actually now the dominant power in the Alpha Quadrant - did the Tholians expand into former Federation territory after The Burn and create an alliance with isolated Federation worlds? The Tzenkethi sounded like they had a few skirmishes with the Federation, maybe they swallowed up a few former Federation members looking for protection from the Emerald Chain? How far out did the Federation expand when it was at its original height in the 30th century? Did it manage to scrape into the Delta Quadrant, did the agressive Fen Domar mentioned in Voyager's 'Endgame' cause issues... so many possibilities.

One thing is for sure: the end of Discovery left the Federation mightily powerful as it now controls most (all?) the Dilithium out there. I think that introducing inter-galactic travel/foes is the way to go now.

Shoddy space stations! Was that a swipe at DS9! Fighting words! Plus those things are made to last. Terrok Nor I think was around 40 years or so and still being used when Sisko and the Federation came to help them recover.

Dialogue in "What You Leave Behind" indicated that that was only a partial count and that the number of confirmed dead was still going up. So they probably killed way more than 800 million, whatever the final number was.

I mean, capitalism in real life is only about 200 to 300 years old, and multiple pagan societies underwent a complete change of society from paganism to Christianity or Islam in very short periods of time in the early first millennium. So I think the Ferengi Alliance could reform in a shorter amount of time than you might think.

Lots of good questions!
