So, IS it done?

I'm betting Burtt gets an Oscar nod (if not a statuette itself) for his amazing work on WALL*E.

I think it's probably a foregone conclusion. There were movies with sound design as good as Wall-E last year, but nowhere else was it so integral to the movie's success.

Yeah, even someone who didn't love WALL-E has got to be fair and give it up for the sound design and effects in that film. Hands down, the most impressive looking and sounding movie of the past year.

Well, it looks like more vfx houses came in later to augment ILM's stuff or maybe take overflow from them, which suggests somebody might have been in a rush to finalize everything even with the later date.

ILM's a pretty busy place. Just because Trek's deadline gets pushed back doesn't mean they don't have another movie waiting for FX. If the producers wanted more work done thanks to the extra time, it's most likely ILM simply couldn't fit it into their schedule. (Or wasn't asked to for budgetary reasons.)

ILM ALWAYS has several shows in the works. It just surprises me that Digital Domain picked up overflow, they are more in the realm of 'principal vendor' as opposed to the smaller boutique type places. That would suggest DD for a major sequence, which means the work was split early on without comment. DD certainly didn't have it on their site the last couple times I was there.

DD isn't cheaper than ILM. go talk to Warner about a certain percentage of vfx shots in RED PLANET if you want to know how pricey DD can be.
