So I watched 35 minutes of True Blood...

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
And it was god awful, dumb as hell, and repetitive.

The fact that it uses vampires (and not in any really interesting or new way) but what bugged me was the constant (and I mean constant) sex jokes or puns that it got old real fast. One characters husband was called "Smallwood" I think and, yes, she pointed that out, HAR HAR HAR! I mean every minute there is another bad sex pun. It's almost worse than the frequency with which Deadwood used cursing. The constant repetition as soon as you turn on that program is so repetetive. Why can't these shows break out of the this trivial tripe and try to write intelligent scripts?

While the show is ultimately not my cup of tea, I thought the idea of Vampires being out in the open and trying to integrate into society was kinda interesting and unique.

That might be inbteresting. But not the way this show is written, when you ahve claw your way through bad bad bad sex puns that are unsubtle and so not witty

I really don't think that the show is attempting to be anything groundbreaking or amazing - for me its just so damn fun in its over the top ridiculousness. Come season 2 when Jason starts wielding chainsaws Evil Dead style and going all Rambo while the town is turned into sex zombies (You probably dont care for spoilers) I felt the show just flat out embraced its silliness - and in doing so gave some cracking moments.

I'm somewhat lost at what you mean by "sex puns". Yeah, there is a lot of gratuitous sex in the show, but I don't remember a whole lot of joking about it (outside of Jason's misadventures - and even then, not so much jokes about it, but a somewhat humorous situation that arises out of it).

You're entitled to your opinion but given you've only watched like a half an hour of a single episode, I personally don't think your opinion holds that much weight. So what, if there's gratuitous sex and violence with average dialogue. It's on HBO for a reason so that it can do the novels it's based on justice. If you dont like it, don't watch it. Why try to rain down on the parade for those who do like it? Especially after telling us you watched like half an episode. Not your typical vamp tale. Way better than Twilight and Vampire Diaries IMHO. At least give it a shot, you might actually like it. Can't wait for season 3!

Yeah my opinion isn't much after wathing a little bit. I agree. It just seems like there was an over abundance of one type of humor that wasn't really funny. It was simply an observation.

I actually think the first episode is pretty mediocre. But once some continuing arcs get moving, the show is a lot better. I would give it until the 3rd episode, and if you're not digging it even a little, bail.

I just saw the whole 2nd season on dvd, it was complete madness!
I love that the show embraces its genre aspects(unlike on a lot of network shows where its seems theyre embarrassed or try to hide the fact the show is genre (coughVcough) while not treating it in a fluffy(bland)way(most SKIFFY shows like Eureka.)

If I have one complaint about season 2, way too many flabby middle-aged peoples in their undies than Ive ever cared to see... :guffaw:

I was the same way with 'Lost.' After 15 minutes of watching the pilot I realized it was just going to be another survivors stuck on a tropical island show and tuned out because there was nothing original or interesting going on. I already saw that three hour long FedEx product placement where Tom Hanks talks to a goddamn volleyball, what more were they going to do here? I mean, throw in a weird monster or time travel or something.

I like True Blood a lot... And I usually hate Vampire crap.

What makes the show work for me as an SF fan is the true "what if" scenario that the show presents. What if vampires (and other creatures) were real, and went "public" - how would they blend with society?

I have only seen season 1 so far, but I am looking forward to the DVD release of season 2.

All these problems are outweighed by the topless scenes with Anna Paquin.

I hate fantasy shows but I love True Blood. It's unashamed trash TV and all the better for it.

The first time I watched True Blood, my impression was "okay, a lot of sex... with vampires. Vamp porn. Seriously?!" But after a couple of episodes, the story really gets rolling and the show becomes really interesting. Yeah, there's a lot of sex and sexual tensions and nudity... but it's HBO so it's expected.
