Smithsonian Enterprise Model Porn

I saw her on the first day she was displayed; I walked over from the first con I attended to see her. Then, after the disastrous "restoration" they moved her down into the gift shop to help drive sales. The latest display was supposed to be more or less permanent, at least as I understood it.

They did have some automatic venetian blinds to keep the UV off of her.

The side with the bare cables was exposed and just as open. They had informational placards explaining the difference, why it looked as it did, etc.

Tallywacker.

It's called the Talliwhacker. :)
Beat you to it by 3 days.

They restored it and then put it away, probably because of what UV light can do to it over time. Unless the windows had UV filtering. Even then. Or nobody looked at it anymore, there are probably a few inferences one can make. That one side with all the bare wires was hopefully not exposed as well, the original model surely had both sides detailed ? (or maybe not, if they did film from that side it wasn't often but I've not watched TOS with original f/x in some time...)
They rigged a "shield" to stop direct sunlight from hitting the model fairly early on.

The port side of the model was never finished and never intended to be. Way back when I emailed Richard Datin, whose shop built it, and he flat out stated such. The whole idea was if you wanted to shoot the port side you'd put mirrored decals on the model and flop the shot left to right, as was done for some shots for the second pilot (as used in "Mirror Mirror"). For some reason they put the pennant on the nacelle on the unfilmable side, though.

There's a big remodel going on in Air & Space, so that's the reason they've stated for moving it.

Tractor beam controller according to: https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/tos-enterprise-deckplans/cutaway.jpg

I swear I saw somewhere it was identified as a telescope. I can't find that now.

There was also a diagram that connected that area to the ion probe from "Court Martial"
TAS sort of showed (though its filmation slides need "correction") that a tractor beam may have been intended to be emitted from the bottom dome...the talliwhacker would be a useful feature to direct the beam. I like it.

Is there a fanon nickname for the lil doohickey that sticks out of the lower primary hull dome that I didn't know was there until like three years ago?

I nominate peewhilly if there is none.

I'm not digging peewhilly or talliwhacker. I nominate the nickname "Fred."

Why isn't it on display anymore?

The area where it was kept is under renovation. It was temporarily removed for safekeeping. And will be back.

I recall reading that the case was getting a lot of sunlight and raising the internal temperature too much, but I did not confirm it.

The blinds on one side and one end were often lowered to decrease temperature.

When the blind is up, the McCall mural can be seen on the far wall.
