Smithsonian Enterprise Model Porn

Is there a fanon nickname for the lil doohickey that sticks out of the lower primary hull dome that I didn't know was there until like three years ago?

I nominate peewhilly if there is none.

At the moment I live about half an hour from the Udvar-Hazy museum, where the restoration took place. It irks me to no end that I didn't even know this was happening until they were complete.

I like to think of it as the phaser cannon from The Cage.

I imagine it as a ground-survey telescope/scanner. The ship's designed so it orbits a planet belly-toward-the-ground, so the lower sensor dome has all the planetary-science-exclusive stuff in it. I also think it makes a nice matched pair with the idea of a large retractable telescope/sensor under the yellow square behind the bridge. My thought is, the ship would spend most of its time not at warp speed orbiting new planets, so the lower dome is soaking up data on the planet with the dangling nubbin targeting points of interest for more detailed inspection, while the upper dome scanned local space, with its telescope taking detailed readings on the planets and moons in the system, or any other nearby objects worth glancing at.

Tractor beam controller according to: https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/tos-enterprise-deckplans/cutaway.jpg

I swear I saw somewhere it was identified as a telescope. I can't find that now.

There was also a diagram that connected that area to the ion probe from "Court Martial"

My Fall 2016 vacation, I changed trains in Washington, D.C., with a long enough layover to walk from Union Station to the NASM Mall building and back (only a mile each way), see and photograph the Enterprise while it was on exhibit following the latest restoration, get a quick look at a few other exhibits, and have lunch in the NASM chow hall.

With time to spare.

Prior to that, the last time I'd seen it was when it was on exhibit in the gift shop (pictures 22, 54, 72, and 73).

Sounds fanon to me.

Yes, and in this case I was answering a question about Fanon, so it's relevant.

It's from the U.S.S. Enterprise Officer's Manual by Geoffrey Mandel and Doug Drexler, published in 1980.

That's it! https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lca...l/USS-Enterprise-Officers-Manual_Page_041.jpg

It was on display, but IIRC they're doing some work in the main hall.

That’s right — it’s off display while they renovate the Milestones of Flight Hall. The project was supposed to be done by 2026, but that was before the pandemic.

I think it's odd that the did the restoration and put her on display for such a short time, before taking her off display for such a long time. I recall reading that the case was getting a lot of sunlight and raising the internal temperature too much, but I did not confirm it.

^^this

Temperatures with the internal lighting (LED now?) could be an issue, as well as lifespan - the interior I recall had scorching already and if the lights or power unit burnt out it could potentially cause new problems (if plugged in and used all the time, especially.)

Also, not seeing your post earlier, I started with the following below:

They restored it and then put it away, probably because of what UV light can do to it over time. Unless the windows had UV filtering. Even then. Or nobody looked at it anymore, there are probably a few inferences one can make. That one side with all the bare wires was hopefully not exposed as well, the original model surely had both sides detailed ? (or maybe not, if they did film from that side it wasn't often but I've not watched TOS with original f/x in some time...)
