Smart phones: What's your data plan?

Some changes at work are going to require me to get my own Blackberry. I don't really have a choice in this, but I'm also curious about any experiences with iPhone, Android, etc.

Anyway, I'm wondering how much of a data plan I'm going to need. My boss says that our work use will amount to about 200mb a month.

Data plans in these parts start at 100mb/month for the cheapest, 200mb, 500mb and 1gb. So I'm debating whether I would want a 500mb plan or a 1gb.

So how much do you use your smartphone and how much data do you go through a month? I'm looking at regular email use and occasional internet use, like to look something up on Google maps. I probably won't do much or any game playing or video watching, but that might change if start using the phone more.

One of the things that's a deciding factor, if I get a Blackberry Torch, (their best phone with biggest screen) it's probably only worth it if I get a larger plan and use more internet. If I just use email and messaging then I'd go with a small screen cheaper model and a smaller data plan.

So how much data does your phone go through in a month?

My wife and I are on an unlimited data plan (I have a first-generation Motorola Droid, she's on an iPhone 4) with Verizon.

I'm on an unlimited data plan. Not that I need it, it's just that I've been on the same smartphone for so long that every year I'm eligible to upgrade, I keep negotiating lower prices and more freebies. I have unlimited data, free wifi, unlimited texts and some ridiculous voice minutes limit that I never even get close to, all for £15 a month, and it's all off-contract too. It's got so crazy that when I do eventually get a new phone, it will be much more cost-effective for me to pay the full price for the new phone and simply transfer the existing plan over, rather than take the free phone and usual contract price. I should be paying 3-4 times what I currently do, based on the package alone, and in fact I don't think you can get unlimited data packages on my operator any more. I'm just grandfathered in because my plan is so old. Anyway, because it's an unlimited plan, I've never looked at the data usage but I'm guessing it's probably under 100Mb a month. All I do is a little light website browsing each day (I don't watch videos, play games or stream music)!

i used to have 10gb a month. but i decided that 1gb is enough. bought myself a 3g modem for my TB so i cut back on my cell phone web browsing and upgraded my 3g dataplan instead.

EDIT: cell in question is an iPhone 4G

As I understand, term-limited contracts for mobile devices are illegal in your land, so that's kind of a moot point. :p

I have an unlimited data plan with Sprint and I use anywhere between 100-200MB per month. I have an Android phone.

Pretty sure they're legal! My operator has offers for 18, 24, 36, and 48 month contracts on their website, for instance. Unless you mean something different by "term-limited contract" than what I thought it meant.

I've got unlimited... Verizon doesn't offer any other choices as far as I know. I've used 323 MBs so far this month.

iPhone 3G
Unlimited data plan (att doesn't offer that anymore - I got in just under the wire)
So far this month, 1875.86MB used as of 4/21. I would be very sad to have to go to a limited data plan. Between video and music, I chew up a lot of data. :D

Ahahaha... unlimited data in Canada.

I'm on Telus, with the 1gb plan which now has a data flex thing. I usually pull 400-500mb a month on my Android phone. It would probably be a lot more if more music streaming services were available in Canada though.

My contract just expired, but I'll be damned if I'm going to sell out to the Canadian mobile providers again. I'll just let them gouge me on added "services" that should be free. I may be slightly bitter. :p

Someone who feels my pain!!!

If I didn't need one for work I'd be tempted to get the most basic phone I can and the cheapest plan, not because I don't see the value of smartphones but I don't see any value provided by the mobile providers.

However I said this to my 14 year old and she said if I got a basic phone it probably won't even connect to a system in 2 years. She may have a point.

I have unlimited on an iphone 3GS; Hubby is limited to whatever ATT did. I can access the amounts used. Neither of us approach even his limit usually.

The Sprint smartphone plan is best. Its the only truly unlimited data plan out there and it only costs $69.99, $79.99 if you have expanded data option like I do. This is all very handy as I send 4,000-6,000 txts a month and browse the internet, and apps store even at work or on the road.

I have an iPhone 4 on a 2GB contact with 3 (best customer service I've ever had, full stop).I don't even use ten percent of that, even with checking Facebook multiple times a day and the odd bit of web browsing. Naturally cost is mitigated by having wi-fi to connect to at home and work, but even without that I'd get nowhere near hitting my limit. My contract is £30/mo. which is really the limit of what I want to pay. The only extra I pay is calling 08xx numbers on rare occasion so voice minutes and texts are a bigger factor to me.

For an idea of what other activity looks like I have a mobile phone dongle I use with my work laptop (that's on O2) and one time I used it for an entire day to connect to the VPN for emails and runing a java client to connect to a client's Remedy app for case management. At the end of the day it was around 150MB all-in.

Depending on usage, all you can eat is totally not worth the money, so bear that in mind and don't get taken in by the sales pitch. The only people that need massive data plans are folk that do a lot of downloading or are streaming media addicts.

Is that $70/$80 per month or year? Please tell me it's per year.

I'm on an unlimited pan as well for data and texts, I'm on a family plan too where we have 600 "whenever" out-of-network minutes as unlimited in-network minutes with unlimited texts.

Lord knows how all of this is going to change in the next year, though, as I'm using T-Mobile.

I do a little Internet browsing (news, Facebook, etc.), occasional GPS stuff, and have a couple of e-mail accounts connected to my BlackBerry. I have a 500MB allowance but only use at most 200MB a month.

Say what??? Its per month. Most other smart phone plans are well over $100.
