Re: Smallville: 10x15 "The Hang...", er, "Fortune" - Discussion & Spoi

Sorry, but one would have to be a little kid not to see the difference between the average quality of writing between the first three seasons (the first two especially - which, while varying ep to ep, some some very strong installments) and these latest ones. Also, the production values of those earlier years were fantastic, with lots of variety, huge sets/landscapes, plentiful extras, etc. But that's changed, as even the vast majority of those who've stuck with the show will admit.

Oh yeah, let's go back to the freak of the week marathon by all means!
I agree that well-acted/written long-arc episodes are the best kind. But given the choice between well-written/acted FOTW eps with compelling characters, actual consequences (many of them die), some forward motion on the overarching plots and fantastic production design on one hand and long-form crap that barely and poorly coheres week-to-week on the other, I'll go with the former every time.

Re: Smallville: 10x15 "The Hang...", er, "Fortune" - Discussion & Spoi

I hated the "Freak of the Week" premise of the show too. Its one of the reasons I abandoned the show early.

BUT I have gone back and watched some of those early shows and while I don't like the premise, the quality was superior in every other way.

There is a knee jerk reaction to say these recent episodes are better because of no Lana, more DC connections, more Lois. But with few exceptions the execution is total "amateur hour".

Re: Smallville: 10x15 "The Hang...", er, "Fortune" - Discussion & Spoi

^ Not to mention the fact that S1 had two non-freak eps, S2 had five and S3 four (unless you count Jonathan Kent, in which case it had two)... And I sincerely doubt that any of the recent seasons have had eps to best those.

In short, S2 was the best, hands down. :p

Re: Smallville: 10x15 "The Hang...", er, "Fortune" - Discussion & Spoi

Was S2 the one where he pined hopelessly over Lana while tackling the FOW with an anti-climatic finish or was it the one where he pined hopelessly over Lana while tackling the FOW with an anti-climatic finish? I simply can't remember.

I don't care about stuff like writing, acting or production values so long as there's lots of DC fanwanking going on.
Fixed your typos. ;)

Oh, and: S2 was the one with the (good) Christopher Reeve appearance, amongst many other cool things/moments.

You didn't fix anything. And to pretend that previous seasons contained those values just proves you have no concept of what they really are. I haven't read comics since the 70's so any DC fanwanking is completely lost on me anyway, child.

Oooh! Christopher Reeve! And you lecture me about fanwanking?

Funny how you fail to be able to mention all these cool things you fawn over.

Re: Smallville: 10x15 "The Hang...", er, "Fortune" - Discussion & Spoi

Hey, Zatanna? Yes--getting the most powerful being on Earth drunk out of his mind during a time of high tension over beings like yourselves is an idea Zatara would have been sooooo proud of.

Beyond silly. Beyond derivative. I despise the vapid resolution that says 'As long as we all had fun and nobody got hurt'. Really? And are we assuming that Zatanna's irresponsible spell had brakes on it to stop any real mayhem? Just once, on some show somewhere, I would like to see the 'fun-maker' really catch some kind of hell for these situations.

Was it in season two when Stompy the Wonder Horse failed to bash the brains out of Lana? I hated that one. I had so much faith in Stompy. :(

Re: Smallville: 10x15 "The Hang...", er, "Fortune" - Discussion & Spoi

No, that was S3... yet another reason why S2 was the best. :p
