Slipstream Technology (Zero Sum Game Spoilers)

PrimeDirective

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
In Zero Sum Game, the engineer in charge of the Typhon Pact's slipstream prototype program, in desperation to save the schematics of the project(after Bashir supposedly erased all of the information in the base's data core), sends the backup files to the Breen Intelligence Directorate. Am I remembering correctly, and if I am, doesn't that mean that Bashir and Douglas' mission was a failure?

Re: Slipstream Technology

No, because Bashir corrupted the files with a viral program before that happened. In fact, Thot Keer played straight into the SI plot -- by burst-transmitting his virus-corrupted backups for safekeeping, he not only guaranteed that his current copies of the work were ruined, he also ensured that any earlier copies of his work or the original stolen plans would also be found by the virus and destroyed.

* I remember Bashir downloading the stealth virus that would destroy all slipstream-related information in the base's computer core, but what made me think that Thot Keer had succeeded in finding virus-free information, is when he finds backup files that were stored underneath layers of security software, that Bashir's virus had somehow missed from premanently deleting.

Re: Slipstream Technology

Re-read page 270, especially this paragraph:

There was one last task he had to complete, and he was grateful that someone at Starfleet Intelligence had already done most of the work for him: he had to sabotage the Typhon Pact’s copies of the slipstream design schematics. Among the various bits of equipment SI had concealed inside his suit was an optolythic data rod configured and programmed to interface with Breen computer systems. Once connected, it was supposed to do the rest automatically—delete the primary copies of the file, corrupt all the backup copies with dangerously inaccurate data, and upload a stealth virus into the Breen mainframe that would lurk and similarly corrupt any new slipstream-related data it encountered.
Thot Keer was mistaken in his belief that his backup copies were intact. As per the quoted paragraph, they had been corrupted by the SI virus program.

* I feel dumb for not remembering everything:(

Re: Slipstream Technology

A big spolier warning at the top might be an idea.

(Says the guy who pissed off several people by giving away George Kirk's death in this very forum two years ago)

Bah, "Final Frontier" was published ages ago...

And here you are doing it yet again.

Re: Slipstream Technology

Yeah, I was talking about the film. I just think a little warning should be given when a book's age is measured in weeks. I know the Stargate forum has a "no spoilers without warning" rule for a year after an episode's premiere, which sounds reasonable.

^ All who posted re: spoilers -- you're quite right, my error. Sorry. I've edited my post to include spoiler tags. If PrimeDirective can do the same, that should fix the problem.

Fortunately, I slipped a spoiler-related virus into the Trek BBS mainframes, which goes in retroactively into anything any of you spoiler-coded anytime ever and gnaws away at your hard drives, Pacman-style.

For David and Christopher, that will mean your half-completed novels residing in your computers are consumed and you guys have to start from scratch.

My bad. ;)

The only half-completed novel I have at the moment is an original one. I just finished proofreading on DTI -- probably the last active involvement I'll have in the process before the book comes out -- and I don't yet have a new Trek book commissioned, though I'm currently working on a pitch.

This has probably been asked, and answered, elsewhere in the forum but while we have you here, Christopher, can you remind us of when is the DTI book due out, please?
