Sky/Fox to remake Rocky Horror

ITA that RHPS doesn't need to be remade, but I 'm not going to let it bother me. Even if the new one is awful it won't affect the original. I'll keep an open mind and watch the remake at least out of curiosity.

I will now proceed to convince myself that I never opened this thread and that this whole thing is just some weird dream... :vulcan:

I don't have a problem with it. It doesn't make the original movie self-destruct or anything. I've appeared in two different productions of the original play and it's fun to see some of the interesting choices different actors make for the same part.

Bring it on, sez I.

Columbia wasn't in the stage play
Wrong. Little Nell originated the role in the first London run of the show.

I read about this two weeks ago and was appalled. I admit it. I love the original and can not see this being a good idea. Tim Curry is a god in that role.

However, having directed and produced the stage version before, I think this could be pulled off if they went in a completely new direction in terms of casting. I would suggest going with an actress to play Frank. If you have someone with the right sexual/masculine energy it could make the role fresh again. And instead of a doe-eyed Susan Sarandon clone, cast someone like Kristen Chenoworth. You could have innocent blond Janet turning into a sexual beast. Brad could be played by an actor known for being droll and he could then transform into a feminine Clay Aiken wannabe. The material lends itself to a broad range of possibilities. And if the director can spin the production in a new direction, one that pays homage to the original themes, stays away from becoming a bad Madonna video and carves out its own territory, it might could work. (I doubt anyone has the artistic creativity to do it though.) The show's themes of sexual ambiguity in a time of strict morality are still relevant today and could still make a powerful statement if handled properly.

i really like your casting ideas, particularly the Frank role. Good thinking. I've seen loads of stage versions of RHS over the last 25 years so I think that's why I'm intrigued with the idea of a remake. I'm interested that you talk about these times as being ones of "strict morality". Are you in the US? Over here in the UK we've gone far, far in the other direction. Since this will be a Sky/Fox ie UK/US production, I'm interested to see where the creative thrust and thematics will come from. There seems to be a bit of a clash there. Mind you, what I suspect will happen is that all the creative input will come from Fox, the US, and some money will come from SKY, the UK.

I'm low on expectation, high on hope that it will surprise me.

Even though I'm well aware there have been umpteen stage productions and a movie remake will in no way detract from the original, I see no real need for said movie remake. Richard O'Brien's lack of involvement / interest isn't a positive sign, either.

Good luck to whoever is cast as Frank, anyway.

I'm going by a remark from Richard O'Brien in the DVD commentary, though his memory did seem to be bad at the point it was recorded (2000) so he might not have remembered it correctly.
