Single crash-course episode

Journey to Babel It practically defines what the Federation became (before spin offs)

Doomsday Machine Plenty of action mixed with plenty of tense drama with an incredible score

The Devil in the Dark The monster turns out to be us

Balance of Terror A long running battle with tons of strategy and none of the later shows "drive right up to each other nose to nose and try not to blow up first" school of combat.

Ah damn, you're right.

OTOH, Uhura, Chekov and Chapel are off watch for "The Doomsday Machine."
Indeed. Another point of interest is that McCoy is off halfway through, a little before the end of Act II, and in And The Children Shall Lead (except for the final moments). On both occasions he assesses the medical problems and disappears afterwards. It's only because we are so engrossed in the action, we tend to forget this.

When I first heard that line as a kid I thought Spock was crap-full.

Spock was dead right!!! :vulcan: How many of us were after that book, comic or DVD for years and once we've got it had it relegated to the back of the cupboard? Or that lady you keep seeing and want to get to know? Once you're married to her how quick things change for the worse...:scream:

For one single episode that sums up the core of Star Trek:

The Corbomite Maneuver

You have:
- 1701 exploring uncharted space
- Encounter with strange object that is more advanced
- Forced to use ship's weapons to defend life of the crew
- First encounter with an unknown alien civilization
- Good interplay between the 'Big 3' (Kirk, Spock, McCoy)
- Kirk saves the day at the last minute (and gets the idea while arguing with McCoy
- Decides to board disabled but hostile alien craft to render aid
- Makes successful first contact at the end
