Simpsons Showrunner: They Will Never Do a Season Finale

After it recently passed 800 episodes, showrunner Matt Selman revealed that Springfield's favorite family will never get a formal farewell, even when they eventually do leave our screens.

Speaking to The Wrap, Selman referred back to season 36 premiere 'Bart's Birthday' as a key reason why The Simpsons will never do a traditional series finale.

In it, Bart – on the cusp of finally celebrating his 11th birthday – is witness to canon rapidly and dramatically changing as the show nears its end.

“We did an episode about a year-and-a-half ago that was like a parody of the series finale. We jammed every possible series finale concept into one show, so that was sort of my way of saying we're never going to do a series finale,” Selman said.

It makes sense, as a similar logic is used with children's TV shows such as when Mr Rogers ended. They never formally made series enders, but instead inserted winks and nudges. Btw, anyone notice the headline should be saying 'series finale' rather than 'season finale'? The body of the article does say series rather than season.

If the network wants a finale, they'll do a finale. It'll probably be ninety minutes long, interspersed with celebrity testimonials and ad spots sold at near-Superbowl rates.

That's what the movie sequel is for. Instead of doing a series finale, they'll likely do a sendoff via their movie sequel. That seems like the perfect opportunity to me.

I don't think this show will ever end. The film has nothing to do with the channel either.

I know, that's what I've been saying. If the show eventually ends as per what's being discussed in the article, they'll do it in such a way that it's not obvious that they've ended it, just like a regular episode, which makes it easier for syndication. This is actually stated in the article. Meanwhile, if they absolutely have to make another movie, then they would shift all their big ideas to it, ones that normally would be used for a series finale.

The network doesn't give a darn about a movie. They want those ad dollars

Then why all the brouhaha about a sequel that's been posted about recently?? Because that seems like a possible conflict of interest if the network doesn't want one. Because inevitably, it would come from the same creative team.

First of all, the channel doesn't belong to Disney. Besides, it wasn't Fox channel that wanted the film; it was Disney, and even before the Disney acquisition, 20th Century Fox wanted it.

But they do have the distribution rights don't they? Otherwise they wouldn't be up on Disney+. You have to admit that it's all very confusing simply from the perspective of more Simpsons. I don't even have access to the Fox network anymore.

I dunno, it seems like it would be a win-win to get all of their big ideas for the movie while they stealthily end the series in a way that doesn't really mark the end. Meanwhile the series technically doesn't end, yet they can still revisit The Simpsons via future movies.

The Simpsons is produced by Disney, and currently Fox owns the rights to new episodes. Beyond that, seasons of The Simpsons are only added to Disney Plus after a season has finished. Even if the channel decides to end the show, they will have to do so in consultation with Disney, and I doubt they will actually end it. Even if they do, Disney will almost certainly continue the show as a film series and spin-offs, because it's a billion-dollar franchise, excluding the show itself.

How about it goes to where it began (the first episode, not the shorts)? Homer, down on his luck and feeling pathetic once again, goes to the dog races, Bart comes along. Only this time he wins, and wins big, and the Simpson family is no longer poor.

And to boot, either Richard Gibbs can be asked to score it (season one composer), or ask Scott Clausen (son of the late Alf Clausen) to score it.

Ok, just end the episode with "Homer never leaped home".
That probably would work better.

I actually like that idea a lot.

Fair enough. Sounds even more complicated than I originally realized. I don't think the Fox Network has to worry about it ending anytime soon, and even if it did, it would live on in syndication. The cast is not getting any younger afterall.

They'll need to update the intro to reflect Putin's Amerika
