Simon & Schuster renews its Trek license

I liked the days when the regular novels were 275-325 pages and then for big stories you had the 'Giant' novels.

.... I'm sorry, but it sounds to me like you're asking for novels to be written on a high school reading level. There's no reason to spend the same amount for less story.

No I'm asking for books that I'd actually enjoy and would be able to read in a reasonable amount of time. And, quite honestly, the books of late feel padded. Most feel like they could be told completely in 60,000 words.

Length has nothing to do with reading level. Battlefield Earth, The Stand, and most Wheel of Time novels top a thousand pages, but they wouldn't challenge a teenager who pulls C's in English. Meanwhile, most Japanese novels (even ones that have won major literary prizes) are only about 200-250 pages when translated into English, with some as low as 150 (if you see one over 300 pages, odds are it was published in several parts in Japan). Toni Morrison, V.S. Naipaul, William Golding, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez -- Nobel laureates all -- have written books that are under 300 pages.

There's no reason to spend the same amount for less story.

Sorry, I don't buy books by the pound like meat. I prefer short, concise novels to bloated doorstops. It's not like novels are crazy expensive -- paperbacks cost the same as movie tickets -- so the fact that one takes thirty hours to read and another only five isn't a factor, even assuming they're equally enjoyable.

That's good news. It's really depressing to think that one day we might not have new Star Trek novels from the expanded universe created for TNG/DS9/etc.

That's a shame. I was hoping someone else would bring a fresh perspective. Oh well.

Really? I am quite pleased with this news. S&S/Pocket Books has built up an incredibly detailed, intricate, continuous extended Trek universe. I'd hate for all of that to get scrapped because a new publisher decides to ignore everything that's come before.

Don't pull a DC Comics on Star Trek.

Guess I need to finish that book now . . . :)

Come on Greg, what's taking so long?

I need to finish the Leverage book first!

Leverage in book form? um....:wtf: Yes, I do watch the series. But I'm not sure if it would work in print.

The only reason I'd even entertain the idea of Pocket losing the Star Trek License would be for Marco to end up back in the saddle, large-and-in-charge of the creating the continuing voyages of...

A dream perhaps, but enjoyable to contemplate none the less.

Speaking of continuing voyages, it's time for a Star Trek/Swine Trek crossover.

I never made it through Children of the Storm and can't remember the last TNG (including Titan), DS9 or ENT book I actually made it through.

Try sticking with a book to the end. Sometimes they start off slow with the setup, but pay off in the end. Did you try the Destiny trilogy by David Mack? I found those quite awesome.

Your doing a Leverage book? Cool

There's at least three books in the works. Keith DeCandido and Matt Forbeck are writing the other two.
Are there any sites with info on them? I've been trying to find them on Amazon and Barnes & Noble for ages, but nothing ever comes up.

The books are still down the road a bit. As far as I know, we're all still writing them!

Well Damn skippy. That's good news.

Both KRAD & Cox working on New Leverage...

Are the 3 novels interconnected with each other as well or just with the Show's continuity itself?

Leverage is one of those shows I just love to watch.

The books are independent of each other. All I know about Keith's book is the title!

FWIW KRAD is posting very short snippets from the WIP The Zoo Job from time to time on his blog.
