Simon Pegg was cast by e-mail?

There was an interview with Simon Pegg in 13 March's Herald Sun Hit liftout. There were four questions on Star Trek, but the most notable answer was regarding his mateship with JJ Abrams and this remark:

We got on really well on Mission: Impossible 3 and then I got back from New York where I’d been shooting How To Lose Friends and Alienate People and I switched on my phone and there was an email that just said “Do you want to play Scotty” on the top which was the most shocking email I’d ever received.

He also says that he was initially wary of a potential nine-year commitment, but was swayed when JJ suggested that they could "hang out" and "have fun" every three years.

I'm afraid the interview is not up at the Herald Sun site yet.

There was also yet another big spread on Eric Bana, where he's quoted as saying that there was no way he could refuse the offer once he read the script, and that it will be a "real crowd-pleaser".

The front cover makes a comment about him being in a Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson sandwich (in his new film, The Other Boleyn Girl), which is a hell of a mental image...

I'm still hoping that casting Pegg is just some kind of prank and they'll tell us who they really cast soon...wow, sounds like they put so much effort into doing the casting, too. :guffaw:

I am actually quite happy about Pegg being cast as Scotty. I think he will be absolutely awesome in the role and will really blow us all away come May of '09

Considering that Abrams worked with Pegg in the past and so was very familiar with his acting capabilities, I'm not worried that the role was offered to him via email without an audition.

All that tells us is that he asked him if he was interested, for all we know that could have been followed by months of conversations and JJ playing internal politics to get him the role. I wouldn't read too much into it.

If it was based on an email - so what? he's worked with him before.

What's all the fuss about Pegg? I doubt Scotty will have more than a few lines. It's a movie not a TV series. The more minor crew members always get reduced to periphery figures in these things.

I'm more worried about casting Eomer as Bones!

Yeah, most of the time there's no reason for a director to screen test or audition an actor he/she has worked with before. And of course, there are many actors who just don't audition - they're very well known and there's no reason for them to show up and read sides in order to get a part.

Yeah I don't get the fuss over Pegg either, but apparently some fans were convinced that this other actor was more suited for the role, and were let down when Pegg was chosen instead.

You mean... it was done by email... and not by a phone call?!? I'm outraged, or will pretend to be so when I work up the energy.

One other interesting comment he made:

I've finished the majority of my scenes on Star Trek. I have to go back next week for a couple of effects shots, but otherwise I'm done. Eric's only just started.

And on whether it is "serious sci-fi":

Very much so. It's not at all ironic. It's not a jokey take on the original series. It's a faithful and loving instalment in the ongoing mythology of the show.

I saw McGillion in his return to "Stargate" the other week. He's a real good actor, but too old and frankly looking way too paunchy and soft to fit into this production as Scotty (based on everything else we've seen so far).

Doohan was likewise a good actor - when he wasn't mugging - and had a few nice dramatic moments on TOS ("Wolf In The Fold" is one, though his faux accent almost seemed to bodily possess him more powerfully than RedJac ever could). That said, Scotty was most memorable as a comic character on the TV series and that was even more true in the movies. Why anyone might think otherwise, or not appreciate the casting of a superb comic actor in the part, is inexplicable.

I don't think I every though I'd ever hear Simon Pegg argued based on his leading man looks.

Nononononono!!!! :scream:

Pegg should have gotten a L-E-T-T-E-R!!!! :scream:
