Sim City 4

Sim City games have always been some of my favorites. Although I haven't played SC4 for quite some time. CitiesXL looks promising.

I was at a library book sale today and I saw the ORIGINAL Sim City there. I could have gotten it for 50 cents but I figure why bother I'll never play it :p The first iteration I've ever played was Sim City 2000 which was one of the first computer games I ever had, that at Duke Nukem (2D side scroller).

50 cents? That's a rip off! You can play it online for free if you're really interested in seeing what it is like.

This thread has made me want to play SC4 again but the last time I tried it was stretched because it didn't have widescreen monitor support. Hopefully I can find a mod that will fix it.

I've been trying to import my own regions. What I have managed to do is discover a multitude of online sources for digital elevation maps, however I face one problem*: What exactly is the gray value for the sea level?

* Well. After I had given up on my goal to model the Faroe Islands (they have a nice amount of tunnels, bridges and ferry connections between the islands). The available online DEMs have a resolution of about 1 km which is not enough for the narrow gaps between the various islands. I thought I had succeeded when I read about the ASTER data (90m resolution), but then ...

The Faroe Islands are just outside of the available data range. :(

(The shuttle radar topography mission also only has data available south of 60° N. The Faroe Islands are between roughly 61 and 64 degrees.

Edit: I'd just like to show you an example of the nice new regions you can create with this data:

However this isn't the max level of detail of the actual data. This was created from a 769x513 sized image. The source data resolution was 18000x12000. :)
