Loving this .!!! How long did it take u to build.? And what's it made of ? Looks just like a prop from the episode very cool indeed !!!!
Here's my just-finished Cage laser build:
Built using SD Studio's excellent parts. Extends (as shown) and sports an actual red laser in the rotating emitter. It's a weighty thing; in the hand it feels like it might actually be real!

Thanks! The barrel is brass and aluminum, the emitters acrylic, the body resin. The parts went together with a minimum of modification and trouble; I spent about three evenings on it.
I'm pleased at how it turned out. It has a "walked off the set" air to it, and as I mentioned the weight of it makes it feel impressive.

I tried searching online for a nice display stand for it, alas nothing good turned up.
you could always fabricate one. or if you know anyone with a tablesaw in their garage, it wouldnt be difficult.
maybe you could save up and get the clear resin communicator too and display them together on a small floating shelf?
if you want, i can draw you up some quick plans to work from, with dimensions and materials etc.

As much as I like the phaser that Kirk & co. used in the TOS post-pilot episodes, I love the clunky laser pistol! This one is an absolute jewel - great work on it!

In later episodes they added bits and pieces; it may be that you're thinking of the gears they stuck on the back. Here's a collection of recent photos of a surviving original prop:

What I meant was that the back of the weapon tapered like a bullet but to the rear... Based on a drawing here

Wouldn't know; I've never read that book. As far as I know, this prop was always shaped as shown (with or without the bits & pieces tacked on).
I'm just glad to see somebody remembering that the barrel extends. Even the Roddenberry.com version only has that ring sliding back and forth.

As I recall SD Studios was selling off some excess parts and finished models, and this collection of parts was somewhere around $350.
