Should this type of discordant activism be banned?

Chicago kids played an orchestral tribute to Obama.

It sounds like they took Aaron Copeland, ran it through a blender, mixed it with tuna fish, and then used a deharmonizer on the result. Can anyone listen to this for two minutes without jabbing pencils in their ears?

Full length version here, in .tv format.

They should call it "The Audacity of Suck."

Should such performances be banned, or should the audience be allowed to throw fruit at them for the abuse of a musical instrument?

It's cheesy, and the trumpets are badly out of tune in the opening and less out of tune further in. Tuners are your friend, kids. The strings are surprisingly well in tune for that age group. I don't see a need to bash them.

Otherwise, I don't see what the big deal is. It's a good speech. Improbable hope, American values. Reagan could have given the same speech. This anti-Obama hysteria is getting really old. Chicago is proud of him. It's not brainwashing. It's a cheesy setting of a good speech to music. That's all.

Who they really needed to do the reading though, was obvious. William Shatner. :)

Did you hear that Dawn Wells (Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island) said that Shatner would definitely not be a good idea to play the skipper?

*searches for the story*

Development is underway for the big-screen remake of the 1960s sitcom classic ‘Gilligan’s Island.’ But Dawn Wells, aka Mary Ann, tells us she's concerned about what the Tinseltowners of today might do to the American cultural icon of yesteryear.

“(A remake) has been a long time coming ... and I have a little apprehension,” Wells told Fox411. “Hopefully the integrity of the characters and the legacy that we have enjoyed for 47 years will stay. We were the surrogate family to an awful lot of folks. It is very important we don't destroy that.”

And while casting details haven't been announced, Sherwood Schwartz, the show’s original producer, has said he would like to see Michael Cera play Gilligan, and there has been some speculation that William Shatner would make the perfect Skipper.

Wells, however, has her own ideas.

“William Shatner as the Skipper is totally wrong. The Skipper was a genuine, sweet and warm character, and he was larger than life.William Shatner doesn’t fulfill that at all," she said. "But I think Michael Cera would be a very good Gilligan.”

Well obviously Shatner would suck as the skipper because Shatner would never get his boat shipwrecked in the first place!

Isn't there already a Gilligan's Island movie thread? I thought this was about a piece of music.

Politics aside, the music isn't that bad. It sounds like stock music from a hundred film scores. Nothing for anyone to get their panties in a bunch about.

Sounds like a pretty average high school band, to me. Trumpets are out of tune, yeah, but the brass in most high school bands is out of tune.

I would respond, but I've jabbed a couple of pencils into my ears and now must go to the emergency room.

Darn. I should've made the warning more explicit.

For now all I can suggest is that the best way forward is to embrace the suck.

Are you describing the musicians, or Obama when he gives a speech? Not that his voice is bad (other than the two- or three-second pause between sentences which I hate) but I've just gotten sick of listening to him see how many ways he can put together the usual phrases about his health care package.

I'd prefer to see adults doing this, I don't think kids in school should be indoctrinated one way or the other to a political cause.

I like him as much as I did when I voted for him. It's funny, I piled on the anti-Bush bandwagon as much as the next guy, but I now see basically anyone in office at this point is going to be hated by everyone but the most ardent party supporters.
