should the next Trek film be about a virus/pandemic?

so the films (and many episodes) have often been about recent events/issues: Trek VI was all about the recent end of coldwar/'the wall coming down in space'.. TMP was abit about the recent Voyager probe, IV was about the whales/greenpeace and even II & III had a coldwar/nuclear doomsday theme and of course V was influenced by the televangelism craze.

... but this virus is a huge monumental thing the biggest thing since WW2 really (and Trek films haven't done a virus/pandemic film yet although FC was closest). so it wouldn't be unreasonable/ unfeasible for the next movie (be it kelvin or not) to reflect that in the star trek/scifi way..in fact it might be wrong not to do so..

I don't care about a Virus topic in another Kelvin movie. But I certainly don't want to see biological warfare in the next Picard season. It would be a great disappointment and nothing people would like to see I would guess. I would want entertainment and diversion from real life events.

The base is there to create a story around one i.e the demise of Vulcan also meant the loss of important scientists that could prevent a virus/bioweapon.

But are you after the virus element, the lockdown element, or the socioeconomical elements? And how big would this “virus” be? A planet? Federation space? The entire Alpha & Beta Quadrants?

Plus, there are debates and conspiracy theories as to where the virus originated from and its true purpose, which is leaning into politics. And I don’t know if you would want to address that in a Trek film. There’s are a lot of shows related to politics in some form as it is already.

At best, you have a story to introduce the Organians into the Kelvin films. And I wonder if that’s the only way to do that, if there is such a goal to do so.

If you really want to address the virus, just use the idea of the Romulan supernova threatening the entire galaxy as suggested by Spock in ST '09 in a future season of PIC. The fears are quite similar in regards to widespread fear and uncertainty.

It really depends on the story, but I'm skeptical. The only example that I watched as it happened was ENT S3 in response to 911, and I found it a little too obvious when the small sphere cut through Florida and their new mission became one of war. But S3 itself was good enough and different enough, so it can turn out fine.

It's inevitable that one of the Trek shows in production will tackle a pandemic. Picard won't, since Patrick Stewart objected to the proposed story about one. But out of Disco, Section 31, and a potential Pike spin-off, one of them will deal with it.

It’s not inevitable since something that topical is likely to be cringeworthy, annoyingly redundant next to the news and possibly even offensive if not done right. Star Trek should lead, not follow with its stories.

It's Akiva Goldsman who wanted to do the pandemic storyline on Picard until Patrick Stewart objected. Given Goldsman is also involved in the other Trek shows, he'll just try on one of them, where they don't have an influential lead star who is also a producer with veto authority on the show's story. Thus inevitable.

No.

How does this virus offer any arcs for the characters? Is Picard going to go all 'Liberate Earth'?

Remember that the virus in a medium work is a set piece. It's not the central character, it could be the central problem, but the characters have to struggle within themselves on top of struggling with the without to make a good story. But all the characters will basically respond the same way: 'Oh frick it's a virus, oh no, oh let's deal with it! Yey we did it! Good job team! '

Boring.

I just can't see a virus movie dealing with that in any real way. It's why they often fail or work as mockumentaries, because then you don't have to deal with a character story, you just dump events on a screen. And frankly Star Trek deserves better than that.

You know what else was about a virus? The Babylon 5 spin-off Crusade.

A virus with an extremely specific 5 year gestation period followed by death.

Do it about the Klingon Augment Virus. It was only supposed to infect a few million, but ended up infecting more than half of the Klingon Empire due to bad planning, and refusal to take precautions out of fear of looking too weak.
(I'm joking - stay the heck away from this)

Well since elements of the original series are replaying in an albeit intriguingly twisted way, you could rework elements of operation annihilate with the parasite and kirks brother and family. But in teh current climate it would be awfully hard to not feel like a parody or really heavy handed social commentary, then helmworth could play kirks brother and thereby interweave the marvel movies for promotional tie in.

Oh god please no one take me seriously.....

Hopefully by the time of the next film the current pandemic will be yesterdays news and a fading memory.

Might as well. Since we'll be doing this again in another ten/twenty years probably it will seem prophetic to futurekind when they look back at the before time in the long long ago. They should also make B̶e̶n̶j̶a̶m̶i̶n̶ ̶M̶a̶x̶w̶e̶l̶l̶ Lieutenant Stiles president of the Federation and have him build a Dyson sphere around the C̶a̶r̶d̶a̶s̶s̶i̶a̶n̶ Romulan homeworld. And all the replicators break down forever so Earth brings back currency based economics and then leaves the Federation.
