Should the movie have been rated 'R'?

As is, the action scenes are kinda cheesy and Star Wars prequel-esque. The sex scene also gets cut short.

Would the movie have been more enjoyable with an 'R' rating and more gratuitous violence and some real sex scenes?

Nah. The movie would not have done nearly as well if they had shot for an R rating. I though the action was fine. Trek has never needed gratuitous violence and it would just seem awkward and out of place.

"R"? Isn't that for porn films?

Admittedly I've been basing that assumption on jokes in American sitcoms, so I might have been mistaken for years.

Trek's never been so dark or brutal as to merit an R rating. An attempt to do so now would just make it seem like superficial pandering.

(Come to think of it, that's one thing I like about the Dominion War. As dark and terrible and heart sinking as it was, our heroes never really lost hope deep in their core. They persevered against impossible odds and won. That's classic Trek right there)

And the last sex scene in Trek involved Riker, Troi, and Shinzon. As far as I'm concerned, that's proof that Trek should never ever have another sex scene ever. Hey, I like them as much as the next hormonally-driven guy, but Trek ain't it.

No. I prefer Trek remain in the family friendly/PG realm. As I believe you can tell a good story without a lot of gratuity.

An R-Rating would have also severely limited the potential summer movie going crowd (teenagers).

Yeah, sex scenes really do not work. It was tried many years ago (pre-ST:TMP) in a an underground fanfic publication titled: GRUP, not to mention the various slash fic out there. That being said; the Orion Cadet was kinda hot !

I'm actually surprised this one merited a PG-13. It was pretty light, as PG-13s go. Star Trek is just not R-rated material unless we want to dive into BSG-level brutality. (And I love BSG, but that's not Star Trek!)
