Should the Jedi be considered good or beneficial?

I think it was in one of the games, in which someone told a Jedi that to everybody else in the galaxy, Jedi and Sith just looked like denominations of the same religion, or something like that. This is echoed by Tarkin's statement to Vader in SW77: "The Jedi are extinct, their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion," which Vader did not correct. Of course, at that point all the nuances of Jedi and Sith belief had yet to be ironed out on the writing/production side.
