Should ST011 have a big name star?

Well, since Matt Damon was interested in Kirk but too old, why not cast him as someone else, if he's interested?

* Matt Damon could be the younger Captain Garth.
* Tom Hanks can be Commodore (Captain?) Matt Decker.
* Eric Bana can cameo as a minor Romulan (Nero's grandpa?).
* Natalie Portman can be a sexy alien love interest.
* Jason Statham... maybe a cool redshirt.
* David Warner would be perfect as the Federation President.
* Leonard Nimoy would show up as Spock Prime again, of course.
* Mel Gibson can play Rynar, the Klingon archenemy of Kirk.

EDIT: Oh... and shouldn't the title be "Should ST012 have a big name star?"

However, Tom Hanks, Daniel Craig etc might be better known...

And IIRC Craig has gone on record as being interested in doing a future Star Trek film.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I half-jokingly suggested stunt-casting Miley Cyrus as Yeoman Rand in the next film. Only half-jokingly, because I wouldn't put it past Abrams to actually try and pull something like that.

I think Hanks could be smoothly integrated without overshadowing it.

I mean, he had to pass up FC - give the guy a Star Trek role.

No, because lots of non-Americans will see it on DVD and be unhappy about not seeing it at the movies since it is an excellent movie. So they will turn up for the sequel.

And anyway, the spotlight should be on Quinto and Pine, not a big name star.
First, they are excellent on their own and don´t need it. Second, I doubt Europeans would turn up for a Star Trek movie with Tom Hanks. Hanks is not the main reason why Angels and Demons is a big hit here. The reason is, of course, that Brown sold millions and millions of copies here.
