Should smoking detectors be on the wall?

I was thinking about this. I have a smoking detector on the basement step and the other 2-3 are high on the wall. Does it make any difference if they are on the wall or ceiling? I stick them on the wall because it's easier to change the battery, but if they don't work as well then obviously I'll move them.

I don't think it makes a difference as to performance, no. I just put them where they fit best.

On the ground level of my house, the detector is on the wall, 'cuz that's where the wires are. In all other rooms, the detectors run on batteries, so they're on the ceiling.

I think it is best to place them on the ceiling because smoke rises, hits the ceiling and then moves along. A ceiling alarm would probably detect the smoke slightly ahead of one mounted high on the wall. A few second might mean the difference between life and death.

I would think that a smoke detector on the ceiling would detect a fire anywhere in the room whereas one on the wall would only detect fires on that side of the room.

So just as long as you're planning on the fires occurring on that side of the room, that should work fine.

If your fire plans vary, however, then I'd put it on the ceiling.

I suppose they would work better on the ceiling because would be easier for it to detect the smoke, unless you place it on the wall on a ceiling-high level... which wouldn't make any difference. Yes, place it on the ceiling.

They are on the wall, touching the ceiling.

It's not like smoke just stays on one side of the room, it spreads rather quickly and should set it off right away.

The one that normally goes off when I cook something and burn it is the one on the basement steps, so the smoke can go down stairs too.

I don't know, but my dad's a state fire marshall and his are all on the walls, usually above doorways. So take from that what you will. It may not even matter. (shrugs) I have no idea. I know he's anal about fire safety, so I would guess it's okay.
