Should NuSulu be gay?

I've seen it brought up on other threads for possible future plot points, and I have to say, I really like the idea. Not just as a homage to George Takei, but in the progressive spirit of Gene Rodenberry and the original Star Trek. If the crew of the Enterprise is meant to represent all the people of earth, there's no reason they should all be straight.

It would be a little weird considering he has a daughter in Trek. Granted she could be adopted I guess but I was under the impression that she was his biological daughter based off the dialogue in Generations

Thats interesting. But I see little point to a new universe if they just plan to take all the characters in the exact same directions.

Its a new universe based on the old one. Unless somehow going back in time and altering the future changed Sulu's sexuality, it wouldn't make much sense

I don't think there's any way to do it without giving the pandering impression of "Hey look at us! Look how progressive and tolerant we are!"

I wouldn't be surprised if they brought in a gay guest character, perhaps one with a crush on the captain, something like that... it IS a new sexed up alternate universe after all. I do think they would subtext it though, as usual, as Trek has always been regarded as a family show.

I don't like the idea to be honest. Just because Takei is gay in real life doesn't mean Sulu should be.

The more obvious gay pairing would be Spock and McCoy. They already fight like an old married couple as it is.

No reason at all, but here's what Orci and Kurtzman had to say about it back in July. (TrekMovie item containing excerpt from an interview)

Yeah, but he's a good choice regardless. McCoy would be the other option, Chekov is simply too insignificant a character. That it would appear to be pandering to folks who can't distinguish between characters and actors is the only real argument against it.

I would like to point out, just for the record, that I would have absolutely no problem, not one bit, if Uhura was bi.

Oh what the hell for?

Having a gay member of the crew acknowledges the diversity that exists in humanity, IDIC and all that. Dramatically it provides an additional point of differentiation between the various crew and could undoubtedly be employed to create amusing scenes or exchanges of dialogue. There's no reason not to do it, it's not like the film was at all coy regarding the sexuality of various other crewmembers.

I happen to be gay and am very much opposed to the idea of Sulu, or any other of the "big 7" begin retconned as gay or bi. Nothing in the "new reality" would account for this. You are either born gay or not. Period.

However, it would be cool if a new character (recurring or permanent) were gay or bisexual.

Oh I've got a reason! The characters were not gay.
