Should Joss Whedon write an episode?

I was just wondering if anyone has talked to Joss Whedon about writing an episode of Doctor Who or Torchwood. I often felt that the RTD era had a certain Buffy/Angel vibe about it. Joss Whedon's shows seemed to be an influence. They even brought over James Marsters to play Captain John Hart. And with the potential cancellation of Dollhouse looming, Joss has already been spreading his TV seed, directing episodes of The Office & Glee. I think it would be really fun to see his take on sci-fi across the pond.

I'd love for him to write an episode of Torchwood, but I just don't feel like he would get Doctor Who properally. I think he could write a great episode (or 2) of Torchwood. Saying that, I'd love to see Quentin Tarantino write an episode of Torchwood as well.

Although, I'd love to see a Firefly class ship flying around in the distance.

I'm not a big fan of Whedon and I don't think he'd do either DW or Torchwood justice. I'd rather see Alan Moore shake things up (and he has previous Doctor Who writing experience, too) - and he's British which would keep the unions happy. Hopefully they'll resurrect Stephen Fry's abandoned episode one of these days, too.

Moore's previous Who writing was comics not scripted telly. Whedon at least would probably deliver a compatent script (and probably wouldn't take his ball and go home when the finished article didn't follow his script 100%) That said I've no great desire to see a Whedon script, although seeing Amy as a gun toting karate kicking super heronie all of a sudden wouldn't be too bad...

Personally I'd much rather Moffat asked RTD to write an episode (I love the notion of RTD being to Moffat what Moffat was to RTD)

God yes. A Whedon written (and directed?) episode of Doctor Who would be fantastic.

This is a great idea. Doctor Who is already very similar to Joss' style anyway.

No and at any rate the new series might've started out being like Buffy but, we have no idea what direction Moffat will take the series. And there's plenty of good British writers I'd rather see writing the show instead of people like Joss Whedon.

True. Although judging by his previous work, Moffat seems to favor even more of a character-centric approach than RTD, which would bring it more in line with Joss' style, not less. We'll have to wait and see how things look.

Fair enough, but I think one episode could be spared. It would be a fun experiment, anyway.

Has there even been an American writer for the revived Doctor Who so far?

It certainly would be interesting to see if Joss's American sensibilities -- and his extreme individualism -- would mix well with Doctor Who's ongoing British-patriotism-building themes.

Given Whedon's habit of lifting show ideas from British and Commonwealth shows* it's more likely his next Fox show will feature a time travelling, wisecracking super powered hot chick and her bumbling male companion...

* Seriously;
Angel = Forever Knight
Firefly = Blakes 7
Dollshouse= Joe 90

(Just for the record my tongue is at least partially in my cheek here; I think he's over rated but that doesn't mean I don't actually rate him)

Ugh, no. I love Firefly but I can't stand Buffy or Angel, while Dollhouse was merely enjoyable. Whedon is highly overrated, the James Cameron of television. All IMHO, of course.

Moffat is even more a tradionalist than RTD, he's been able to get us Richard Curtis and possibly Neil Gaiman. We don't even know what Joss Whedon thinks about Dr. Who old or new or even he might want to do write an ep.

Well since Moffat seems to be giving us a very different, perhaps lighter Doctor Who for Series Five I think a Joss Whedon would be a great guest writer. Is Joss even a fan of Doctor Who and given the chance would he want to do it? I read a couple weeks ago that he's directing or writing an episode of Glee, a show that I've yet to watch.

Good question. We've heard plenty about how big a fan RTD is of Joss Whedon, but I don't think I've seen any opinions expressed in the other direction.

other than the use of two characters who look like Rose & the Doctor in one panel of his S8 comics, you have a good point, JW does not talk about RTDs like RTD does JW, then again no body talks about anything like RTDs.

I like Joss's stuff. I remember reading a biography of his a few years back and I think I recall that he spent some time in the UK when he was a kid, so he might be able to tap into that if he needed any British-ness. I really can't see his style matching Dr Who, though. On the other hand, he's a writer and writers can analyse texts and have a go at matching them if they're so inclined and have the skill. I can see his stuff working better with Torchwood than Who. Still, the way that Torchwood worked in the last season I'd much prefer it continues that way than have Joss write for it. This is because I can see Joss's stuff elsewhere, but Torchwood is Torchwood and there isn't really anything else like it.

So, that's my long winded way of saying yes, and no. :confused:
