Should I buy TNG: Indistinguishable from magic

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Hi all

I was considering buying this, as i'm a big fan of seeing what Scotty is getting upto in the 24th century.

Has anyone read it yet, would you reccomend it?

Scotty's been mostly running the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. There's a extended story on him in 'What's Past' a recent SCE trade.

No, that's a preorder. It doesn't come out until the end of March, actually.

I really like the author and topic, so I will certainly be buying his when it is released in ebook form on March 29th.

Yes you should.

Buy copies for all your friends and relatives too.

I may be slightly biased in this opinion, though...

I love David McIntee's Doctor Who writings, so I am eagerly awaiting his foray into the Trek universe!

Small universe syndrome at its worst. A whole galaxy of talented beings to choose from, and Starfleet chooses a 200 year old guy who was stuck in a frigging transporter beam for however many years to run its SCE unit. Dumb.

No offense to the writer; I only intend to denigrate the concept. I'm sure the writer is cool shit.

Not necessarily. As shanejayell said, it's an administrative job more than a hands-on position. Scotty's experience and his reputation could serve him well in such a position.

And Scotty was only 153 by the calendar, 78 biologically, when he got the SCE job.

Have you read his two previous Trek Lit stories, "On the Spot" in the TNG short story anthology The Sky's The Limit, or "Reservoir Ferengi", the Greed/Ferengi novella in Seven Deadly Sins. I've only read RF, but I really liked it.

Luckily the SCE stuff predates my input by a goodly number of years...

I totally forgot that David had written "On The Spot!" That may be my favorite story in The Sky's the Limit. Haven't read Seven Deadly Sins yet, it got lost in my recent move to France, and I need to get a new copy...

How the hell did he catch up with 100 years of innovation?[/QUOTE]

If I remember right from NF the department of temporal investigations has specialized accelerated learning techniques that they use to ''catch up'' those who have been temporally displaced, it's possible that after he finally decided to stop wandering and rejoin Starfleet they insisted that he take this course.
Plus, of course, he's Scotty

Scotty is the SCE supervisor and liaison to the Admiralty. His reputation serves him on both sides. The engineers respect him, and the admirals will listen to him.

Some people may be assuming that the other supervisor/liaison candidates were also respected engineers. I don't think that's a safe assumption. It's possible that the role has traditionally gone to a line officer with battle-field experience. Scotty may have been seen as a good compromise.

Well, for what it's worth, The Future Begins establishes (building upon Scott Pearson's SNW tale "Full Circle") that John Harriman was the SCE liaison before Scotty took over.

Mahmud al-Khaled was the first when the post was created, but we don't know who took over from him, or who had the job in what is generally termed the "Lost Era".
