Captain Archer had a weird obsession with beagles and water polo. Data spent all his off-duty time painting weird crap and talking to his cat. Kirk liked to take his shirt off and throw oiled-up dudes around on gym mats in the engine room. Picard attended a book club or something. It's a running gag that at least one character in each series, usually the Captain, has a strange off-duty hobby. What do you think Discovery's Captain will be into?
I personally think that we should see someone who has an obsession with karaoke. Maybe a Billy Ocean cover artist, or someone who's heavy into the classical works of David Hasselhoff. It would be a cool way to have actual contemporary musical celebrities guest-star on the show (as holograms) and not break continuity. I could even see them resurrecting dead performers like Michael Jackson through CGI and bringing them on the show.
