This is something I wrote up earlier today. Sisko's thoughts as the Defiant is destroyed in "The Changing Face of Evil".

Writer's comments:Anyone who's seen DS9 probably remembers the Season 7 episode, "The Changing Face of Evil", in which the USS Defiant is destroyed by the Breen. I thought it'd be a good idea to write out that sequence and explore Sisko's thoughts. Just a little one-shot I thought up. Enjoy!

Told in first-person through Sisko's viewpoint.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Good-bye, Defiant…

"Poor captain Sisko. I believe he was quite fond of that ship…"

-Weyoun.

I can see the large Dominion fleet spreading out before my eyes near the planet Chin'Toka. Breen, Cardassian, and Jem'Hadar. I know that every being on those ships is eager to bring down the Federation; they'd shown that after the Breen attacked Earth.

Well, I cannot allow that to happen.

Anticipating the coming battle, I sit in the Defiant's middle chair. Several other ships, Federation, Klingon, Romulan, streak past my prized vessel with a good intention, to weaken the Dominion.

"Sir, they've locked weapons on us," I hear my Chief engineer, Miles O'Brien, warn.

They're getting eager.

"All auxiliary power to forward shields," I order. "Colonel, attack pattern Delta."

"Aye, sir," Colonel Kira Nerys complies.

"Mister Worf, Quantum Torpedoes."

"Target locked!" shouts Worf.

Then I give the main order.

"Fire!"

The Defiant banks hard to port and unleashes two rounds of Quantum Torpedoes, which strike a Breen ship. The enemy vessel explodes in the midsection and splits in half, drifting afar.

She's a tough little ship, all right, I think to myself as the agile ship speeds past the debris.

"Target locked. Launchers one and two, standing by," Worf says.

"Fire!" I order yet again.

The ship unleashes several phaser blasts on yet another Breen warship, shredding the hull.

I manage to smile as the enemy ship begins to drift, seemingly crippled in space.

Then the Breen ship unleashes an unknown weapon that strikes the Defiant.

The vessel shudders and its engines come to a sudden stop. I can hear an alarm blaring in the background. But most peculiar of all was the blue, lightning-like currents overtaking the ship.

I look around the bridge to see questing looks from every officer. O'Brien, Dax, Worf, Kira, Bashir and Nog. What's happening?

"What the hell…?" I hear O'Brien say. He's as confused as I am.

Through the viewscreen, I can see Dominion warships speeding past, trading shots with the Federation and its allies. The Defiant shakes rather violently as another torpedo strikes her underside.

Sparks fly and officers fall to the ground.

"We've lost power to the helm!" Kira.

"The com's out!" Dax.

"So are weapons!" Worf.

The negativity continued to pile on. Officers, men and women, were dying, as was the Defiant.

I've seen too much death in this war.

"Primary computer systems are offline," says Bashir.

Another explosion rocks the ship.

"Manual controls are frozen," Kira adds.

Another explosion.

"Chief!" I call out. O'Brien can fix this.

"I can't get anything back online, somehow they're draining all our power…"

Another Breen ship makes a pass on the Defiant, another torpedo hits the top, then another, then another.

I place my hands against my face. The ship is unsalvageable.

I watch as Kira is thrown from her seat from the last strike. Bashir jumps to help her.

"Fire suppression systems are offline!" Nog shouts.

Worf shouts, "Use the manual-"

The rest of his comment is cut off by a violent explosion.

"I'm on it!" Nog.

The ship shakes under the hail of weapons fire.

"We're venting plasma coolant from over eight separate EPS ruptures. The air is becoming toxic, captain."

There's still a chance to save her.

"Sir, the ablative armor's starting to buckle!"

"We have hull breaches on decks three and four!"

"Without power for the emergency force-fields, there's no way to seal them."

I realize there is no way to win this battle as the voices bombard my mind.

I pick my head up and realize the only solution.

I give the order I hoped never to give.

"Abandon ship…"

Every officer gazes at me as the alarm sounds. Dax, Bashir, O'Brien, everyone.

"You heard me, everyone get to the escape pods, now!"

Every officer calmly exits their station. Bashir helps up Kira, O'Brien helps up another injured officer.

I begin rushing towards the airlock, but I can resist pausing at the entranceway.

The alarm screams in my ears, toxic air fills the bridge. These are the Defiant's dying breaths.

"Captain…" O'Brien calmly says.

I turn to face him, then to face the bridge again, unsure of what to do.

Part of me wants to remain on her bridge.

"She's a fine ship," I say.

"No one will argue with that, but like you say, it's time to go!"

He's right. The Defiant is gone, there's nothing left I can do.

I motion for my chief to exit, then take one last look at the shattered, smoke-filled bridge that I'd sat in for years.

In one of her escape pods, I watch out the viewport as Breen torpedoes streak past, barely missing the pods. I see the Defiant drifting haplessly in space.

I now understand how Jean-Luc Picard and Worf both felt upon losing the Enterprise-D.

As the pod drifts away with the others, I look out the viewport to see several other derelict ally ships.

Then I see the Defiant, slowly adrift. It looks like she's attempting to shield the escape pods from enemy fire.

Two more pods lurch out of the vessel. I force myself to watch two torpedoes strike the ship's underbelly.

An explosion rips through the middle of her hull.

The bridge breaks off.

The rest of the ship splits in two, her wreckage joining the rest of the dead ships.

The Defiant is lost.

No ship will ever replace her.

It's okay I suppose, but to be brutally honest it's virtually just a transcript and description of what was shown on screen - it doesn't exactly add anything of value.

Thanks for being constructive. :) Brutal honesty is appreciated.

I almost didn't add the battle scene, and thought about just including the destruction.
