Dude. It's bad enough that you're hotlinking, against board rules, but then you have an image THAT size?

17th Century Japan is gorgeously and authentically depicted in SHOGUN. Every last detail is just perfect. The actors are all solid performers. The women and locations are very beautiful. Every costume is a work of art. There are Samurai, Ninja and Pirates in this miniseries!

I must confess to being somewhat of a fan of it - and the book it's based on - though it's essentially a period piece romance. The fact that it was first broadcast in 1980 only adds to the sense of history. However: if you get bored easily, I suspect you will not appreciate SHOGUN ...

John Blackthorne is marooned on the shores of Japan, never to return. The Powers That Be are very interested in his arrival and so he is soon thrust into a very dynamic set of circumstances. Unfortunately, he does not know Japanese and this series is shown from his Point of View.

He does pick up on the odd phrase, or two - as do we - but never enough to forego an interpreter. There are no subtitles in the actual film, itself and it takes its sweet time in making sure everything's understood. This approach is used often and alot. There is danger and action peppered throughout the series, to be sure, but most of the time, we're basically watching Hawthorne turning Japanese.

... And falling in love.

Is the image and sound quality of the Blu-ray that much better than the existing DVD and is the aspect ratio 4:3 or 16:9? The specs on amazon.com state 4:3 but the included video suggests it's 16:9.

ETA: No matter -- blu-ray.com answered my questions

Sometimes a forum thread is like a frying pan to the face... I bought the DVD over 10 years ago, and I still haven't watched it, and now it's out on Blu-ray?!?!

If I still haven't watched it after buying it 10 years ago, I'd examine my spending policy and consider subscribing to a streaming or rental service.

I'm actually doing pretty good when it comes to watching what I buy. It's just this one slipped through the cracks. Thankfully my parents watched it when I bought it, so it's seen some use at least.
