Sherwood Schwartz RIP

Yeah, the LAist was reporting this on Facebook just now. All the more ironic for me as I'd finally gotten around to driving by the Brady Bunch house last month.

RIP.

A true television icon. I loved watching Gilligan re-runs as a kid. What a long and amazing trail he blazed. At 94 what a full life. R.I.P. Mr. Schwartz.

One of my favorite stories of the TV industry is the legend that Schwartz sold network executives on funding the pilot for Gilligan's Island by singing them the theme song he'd written for it!

That's an interesting one. The pilot for Gilligan's Island didn't use the famous theme at all - there was an entirely different, calypso theme. You can watch it here:

R.I.P. sir

Loved Gilligan's Island, Hated the Brady Bunch.

Well, The Brady Bunch may be a bit cornball, but it was groundbreaking in at least one way — it was the first American sitcom to depict a blended family, an increasingly common phenomenon in an era of rising divorce and remarriage rates (although the characters of Mike and Carol Brady were both widowed).

And I still remember Schwartz’s less-than-smash-hit It’s About Time.

Ninety-four is a damn good run. Rest in peace, sir.

I watched It's About Time. I loved it, but I was in single digits at the time.

Halfway through its single season they flipped the premise in an attempt to salvage it, having the astronauts bring the cave family forward to the present day.

I had NO idea that had ever been done... Thanks for posting it! To see those cast members and Schwartz himself..... man the memories it brings back.... Tina, Tina, Tina....... :adore:

I know I sound so repetitive, but man did he ever have a good long run at life. Both "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch" were particular favorites as a kid.....

And thank YOU for posting THIS one. I know that I saw the original pilot, as it had a completely different actor for the Professor. Thing is I can't recall which version of the theme was used when I saw it.

And he seemed a relatively nice guy too. He genuinely enjoyed his work and loved these characters.

I never got into Gilligan's Island. But I loved the heck out of the Brady Bunch back in the day. He led a long and fullfilling life :)

Not a Brady Bunch fan, but I loved Gilligan's Island and, of course, I loved It's About Time. It had dinosaurs and cave girls. That was probably my first experience with the frustration of cancellation.

RIP, Mr Schwartz. :(
