Shatnerverse Refresher

Now that "Captain's Glory" has come out in paperback, I'm finally ready to dive back into the Shatnerverse books. After reading the MirrorU trilogy piecemeal and not remembering a damn thing about what happened, I decided with the next trilogy I would just buy them and wait until it was complete then read it all at once.

Only thing is I don't remember a single thing about the entire series of books! What do I need to know in order to read (and understand) Captain's Peril/Blood/Glory? All I remember is that the Borg resurrected Kirk and that's it

I haven't read the things but I'm assuming this is a linked trilogy like the previous two? Are they any good?

Kirk got resurrected. retired to Chal and fell for Teilani. Thwarted the Borg-Romulan Alliance, thwarted the threat posed by the Virogen (sp) virus. Then he thwarts an attempt by the Mirror-Kirk to take over the K/C Alliance, saves the universe from the mysterious Preservers and Teilani dies after having their kid.

That's a good way to sum it up.

Honestly, though. The Totality trilogy doesn't overly rely on what came before to enjoy/understand. And they are pretty good about "reviewing" what happened if it's necessary.

Basically, you need to know that Kirk is still alive, with a kid. Adventures ensue. Also, it is important to know that the Totality trilogy is more like the Odyssey trilogy...three pretty much stand alone adventures that are loosely connected (but not as loosely as the Odyssey Trilogy).

I would have to say that the Totality Trilogy was kind of dull IMO. My favourite of the novels so far has to be the Mirror Universe Trilogy. I'm looking foward to Collison Course.

Spoiler: Totality Trilogy

It seemed that the actual story was way to buried in the first two novels. In Captain's Peril, the Picard/Kirk story was boring as hell and had, from what I remember, NOTHING to do with the flashback adventure (which ties into the trilogy). If anything, the novel should have just been the flashback adventure, or have the "present-day" adventure tie into it somehow. "Captain's Blood" was a little better, but I remember becoming distraced while reading it which is never a good sign. "Captain's Glory" I found to be okay. I sped through that one. The story was probably the strongest, even if the ending with Kirk's kid was hella confusing.

In all, I think the first "trilogy" was the best/most enjoyable. I personally thought they were trying to hard with the Mirror Universe Trilogy.

In both cases, the title is perfectly clear to assume (without including the word "spoiler") that there would be spoilers discussed in said thread. And once again, I find myself asking you what did you expect to get out of the thread for a book(s) you haven't read about?

It wasn't Shatner's original intention. In an interview, Shatner explained that when his real-life wife drowned in their swimming pool, he ditched the scenes he was working on and worked through some of his own grief by sending Kirk through a similar unexpected turmoil: the death of a life-partner.

Yeah, after his real-life wife died, you could tell there was a shift in his writing style.

"The Return" should have been First Contact + Nemesis. Make the long TV episode Insurrection be the shakedown cruise or something for the E-E with the diplomatic stuff at the beginning, then the Ba'ku crisis happens. Then the next film could have been a budget-crushing Borg and Romulan extravaganza. Multiple Borg cubes connecting, the Romulans being schemey, past and present crews...
