Shatner, Goldsmith and Trek 5

Does anyone know why Shatner or Paramount went with Goldsith for Trek 5 ? Despite all that Shatner did wrong, he did a great job of bring Goldsmith back to Trek.

I don't know, but I'm glad he did. Goldsmith's score for Star Trek V is one of the best things about that film (and I say that as a fan of the movie).

I think Shatner had Goldsmith hired earlier on than is often the case, because on other shows, they had to go with cheap composers (horner for instance) because there was no money left in the budget for 'real' composers. So this was a case (like the great new phasers) where money spent up front ultimately may have hurt the movie since he didn't have any money to do the climax, especially after the budget restrictions mentioned in the makingoftff book that were put on later in preproduction.

Goldsmith made the movie a lot better than it actually was. "The Mountain" is a fantastic cue and starts the movie off beautifully.
