Sharing Technology...

Did Capt Janeway violate protocal by sharing technology with the Hirogen in "The Killing Game pt. 2" does not the federation forbid sharing any federtion technology under any circumstances, even when it may save lives. Just finished watching the episode and Janeway gave holodeck technology to the Hirogen.

In TNG Pickard gave Professor James Moriarty a holo-program that would allow him to exist in an holo-enviroment was that also a violation of Federation protocal??

Resistance is Futile

Yes, she did.

But, this is a good case of the writers choosing to ignore a very rigid canon rule to tell a good possible future story.

The prime directive at times is what the writers want it to be, but it can also serve as a straight jacket that can restrict the imagination of the writers who want to tell good stories in the Star Trek universe. I am just glad that the new Star Trek film isn't going to be so rigid in its thinking that it will preclude us from telling good stories down the road by adhereing to a set of rigid rules.

I think that this time it could be a double edged sword. Voyager giving them the holotechnology was intended to try to save lives not end them so I could see an argument that they were upholding the prime directive by protecting others.

The prime directive was intended to prevent interference with the natural development of other cultures/peoples.

Giving warp technology to a pre-warp culture would be prohibited. Giving holotechnology to a warp capable civilization wouldn't be.

^ I think what they're arguing is that the holotechnology does interfere with the natural course of development of the Hirogen.

Non Sync is holding to an interpretation of various dialogue about the PD and ignoring other pieces of dialogue about the PD that no particle of the Prime Directive at all applies to any post warp culture... Which is just silly considering all the times they have said that the Prime directive does apply to Space fearing cultures.

Janeway and Tuvok talk about the merits of handing out replicators to pay their safe passage through many angry kingdoms on their way home in season 7's Flesh and Blood, and lament that although the replicator is peaceful kitchen appliance at it's most benign application, that these same replicators that can be used to make food can also be used to make weapons. Which is an elementary rendition of the possible dangers compared to how Janeway explained why replicator tech in the hands of the kazon could alter the balance of power in the quadrant back in season two to Neelix, which is the reverse of the Malon refusing to be reduce their eco footprint because it would reduce their bottom line not to choke to death on their own garbage and take all their nieghbours down with them...

Really it's much the same as Tracy handing out Phasers in the Omega Glory and Kirk (Who got away with it) backing on Arms race on Tyree which eventually left the planet an entire desert which Sisko found it because the Feds and the Klingons obviously eventually gave these hillbilly knuckle draggers nukes and other weapons of mass destruction, and if the feds stopped giving these monkes more advanced weapons at pace woth the Klingons then that would obviously set off a domino chain and put an end around on the Oganian Peace accord.

I liked the Stargate episode where some god was punished for giving a herd race weapons to defend themselves in contrivance with their own non-interference manifesto, who turned around and quickly reverse engineered the tech to become a race of conquerors, but the God was already being punished despite his good intentions because he could not foresee the unforeseeable impulses resulting from his initial act of benevolence which is why there is a rule exactly against what he did.
