sfdebris: The Outrageous Okona and The Game

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but I think sfdebris--the individual who posts Trek reviews on Youtube--really did some good reviews this time around.

For The Outrageous Okona: I don't think I particularly liked the character of Okona myself (sfdebris already brings out why); I also question the choice for the 'best comedian' being Joe Piscopo....(I didn't find him appealing or funny even when he was supposedly a name).

The comedian that comes to mind that was 'big' at the time, was Eddie Murphy; there are others, I'm sure....but he--Murphy--was already an idea for STIV, but was deemed a risk since he was probably going to overshadow the main cast a la Richard Pryor in Superman III.

Funny thing is, I was never a real Eddie Murphy fan, myself...but I do think there were other choices than the one made.

On The Game; the only two things that were good about that episode was cute Ashley Judd as Lefler and cute Alyssa Ogawa (who makes some very 'interesting' sounds while she's playing 'the game').

Robin Lefler was something of a fan favourite back in the day. People liked referencing Lefler's rules and such. I think the fact she was played by Ashley Judd was a big part of the reason for her, er, popularity.

Aside from that, Okona isn't good, but I'm not sure I'd consider it as soul-crushingly awful as he did. It's more a 3 or a 4, surely, this isn't "Haven" for chrissakes. But that's just arguing over how much a pile of crap smells, I guess. But yes, the subplot is idiotic on so many levels and Okona is a spectacularly ill-conceived Han Solo wannabe. I am thankful that when one thinks about it there's been comparatively few Han Solo wannabes.

^^

I'm not a big fan of Firefly, but I do think the character Mal was a good take on Han Solo...

I meant in Star Trek, but yes, Mal was okay (a trifle sociopathic, but I'm fine with that.)

Funny, I always saw Okana as more of a Madmartigan from Willow. As I recall, that particular episode came out durring a writers' strike, which would likely account for the poor story telling involved.
Although I really thought the sub-plot about Data going into the holodeck was assanine, I think the episode really suffereed from TPTB not structuring the story well at all. It's like they couldn't tell themselves what was the A plot and what was the B.
Also, it's piss poor writing to have the B plot so unrelated to the main plot.
IMHO.

No it was written after the strike was over, but the writer of the episode (Burton Armus) and some other members of the writing team in early season 2 did not last long.

Good thoughts!:techman:
